I find that I have a hard time analyzing symbols and deeper meanings in literature. When I do try and find meaning, I end up sticking to an early assumption and my confirmation bias makes me seek out stupid pieces that fit into my stupid analysis.

How do I improve my analysis skills? I feel like an inadequate dunce every time I read literary analyses online.

Do you take notes on what you read? I think that would help. I like to list characters, potential motivations, and settings. I also write down questions about the book that might be relevant once I am finished reading. Being able to step away from the inner text is important.

It's comprehensive definitions touch on cultural/historical/spriritual meaning behind various symbols. It is the BEST book on symbols you could purchase. I bought my copy for a friend's birthday, but after skimming through it, I couldn't give it up.

Go figure the author was a "poet, art critic, hermeneutist, mythologist, and musician"
