Not sure if you're being ironic, but philosophy (and theology and literature) have always been a pastime for people in the West. It's not unusual spending your free time learning about philosophy or reading literature. This was considered a noble pursuit for anyone in America from the Colonial period into the early industrial period, and maybe ending around the 60's or 70's. You should look into how "literary" farmers were in early America, or how many lectures there were in 19th century towns and cities, or how many classical allusions were made by governors and presidents in the past.
