Is anna karenina a good book to gift to a female friend? I don't want to give it to her and have it be a total flop.

>> No.12896211

depends how much of a history with depression she has...

It will make you look like an asshole, never give a book like this to a woman unless she's expressed an interest in it. It comes across as either pretention or you think she's too dumb to have read it

Very little it seems. I know she used to be picked on when she was young but it hasn't effected the way she is as an adult today, shes mostly a positive person

Shes a conservative and religious young adult who loves romantic and dramatic novels

>> No.12896253

>>12896229
Why would it come across that way? Is it really that pretentious of a book?

>> No.12896266

It's a 900 page Russian novel, gifting it makes you look pretentious. The quality of the book (and its amazing) is hardly the issue here

She’d be all over Tolstoy. Go for it.

I see your point thank you

I'd say just gauge her interest on this kind of book. It's excellent but also long and requires some persistence. She's seems like a good person based on your replies, so I'm sure she'll appreciate the sentiment regardless. No need to worry about coming off as pretentious or anything like that.

Then any 19th century russian novel will work great in most cases.
>>12896229
I dont think giving someone a great book is pretentious just because its russian and has 900 pages. Most people today dont even know about Anna Karenina.

Yea that's why I considered it. But I wasnt sure if it was a book geared towards woman. I've only ever read a few of his short works

I think it's an extremely interesting book for women too. It's one of the greatest novels of all time. Easy to read but deep. Very pleasurable and fun read. Christianity is an important element in the novel.

The only reason you shouldn't gift her this is if you think that she doesn't really like reading. If she does, and she decides to read this novel, she will most likely love it and understand that you gave her an amazing gift.

I know she enjoys reading and shes gifted me a book recently, so I decided to return the favor. Hopefully she enjoys reading as mush as I think she does

That thickens the plot, so we'd also need to know which one she gave you.

Unless your friend has already read it or is a massive brainlet to the point where she won't read it "because it's Russian" there's no reason not to. It's a great novel and if I were you (assuming you're a fan as well) I'd really enjoy talking to a woman about this novel.

I think you'll have fun discussing it with her then.

I wouldn't worry about the brainlet risk then, she already low-balled you and at this point, it's fair play.

She might enjoy it, she might not. I don't think it's necessarily a man/woman thing. It's a question of whether or not you're interested in literature, and few people these days have the patience to get through a 1000+ page novel, sadly.

I'm too autistic to be a good judge of these things, but I think it could be fine as a gift. If she doesn't like it, she doesn't like it, but it shows that you hold her in some regard (you wouldn't give a great novel to someone you thought little of). I think she'll appreciate that.
