lol. i suppose from that angle it kind of does look like it, huh? i bought it at a gem show from a chick who told me it was opal stone and deer bone, tied together with deer sinew. recently upon closer inspection i discovered an air bubble in the blade, which has led me to conclude that she was a fucking liar and it's just glass. whatever, though. i still dig it.

honestly, i could see it selling to some extent, as long as it's done right. i'm getting to the age where some of my friends are having kids, and some of them would totally buy goofy shit like that. children's books would overall be an interesting market to get into. making weird kids books for millennial parents could very well be a goldmine. imagine "art-hoes" in the next five years, as single moms buying weird kid's books, more so just to post about it on social media than read it to their kid. sounds grim, so hopefully, maybe they'll value both equally. kind of rambled there, but yeah, it's interesting to think about.

In the US it used to be a given that men had a pocket knife on them, the grocery stores even sold them and the hardware stores would have a diamond stone sitting on the counter so you could touch up your knife when you came in for a pound of nails. The last of the local neighborhood hardware stores here still keeps a stone and a bottle of oil on the counter, I stop by and grab something or other and give my knife a sharpen for old times sake when ever I find myself in that part of town. Those days are largely gone and it seems most do not carry any sort of knife these days, many that do seem to do it as a fashion statement more than utility. I have carried a pocket knife every day since I was 7 when I got my first knife, a victorinox, I feel naked without a knife in my pocket.

The Victroinox mentioned is a good knife, the two blade one is fantastic, the small blade is a respectable whittler/chip carver, long blade serves well for general purpose utility and the handle is comfortable enough that you can while away some time whittling without your hands aching. The models with a couple extra things stuck between the blades are a little more comfortable for extended use, the extra thickness is nice, but those extra things are largely useless.

The pic related Brown Mule will probably remain my favorite pocket knife, the handle is just so comfortable. Think they are all stainless these days, but the old high carbon blades are not hard to find used for not much. They hold a great and long lasting edge.

There is always something better, but who cares.

The Buck is a good solid lockback, general purpose utility sort, it is made for doing those odd cuts one happens upon and the handle is decent enough for even extended use, but a tad thin. Great size, carried one for years. Just make sure to clean the area where the blade locks into the back, lint will collect here and keep it from locking, if you let it build up too much it will get pulled in and compacted, can be very very difficult to get it out at that point short of pulling it apart.

The first and third are standard liner locks, their handles allow a very strong grip which is good for hacking through thick rope or the like, but they only really allow for gripping tightly in your fist, give no real control for fine work or options for alternate grips. The second is new to me, the strong taper to the butt will not permit using a strong grip for any amount of time, but I can see it being a useful and comfortable for many other thing and just fine for the occasional bit of heavy work. It looks like it is inspired by the Laguiole knife, could be their attempt at making a harder working version of their old standard.

Interesting stuff, thanks. I'm really drawn to old school smaller folding pocket knives like the Buck 55 and Brown Mule, but am open to more modern interpretations.

>> No.12894597

>>12894550
Unfortunately modern folders are largely form over function, just think of holding any of the previous three upside down, blade down pinky side with cutting edge towards you, a grip that is very useful if you need to slice something tough like leather, it would be very uncomfortable, especially the first, the second would not be bad, but it would be hard to get a good grip on that skinny end where your hand is the strongest. A more regularly shaped handle like the 55 or Brown Mule will be just fine for a good while and will likely get you through that one leather working project that does not justify buying specialty tools.

Frankly, everyone should have a Brown Mule and a Opinel, at $10 or so, depending on size, they are just too cheap and useful to not have. They will find use even if they do not live in your pocket.
