Alright, what is the general opinion on this book? Is it worth reading? Don't discuss the author, just the book itself

>> No.12891180

We've finally reached the age where basic ways to improve your life such as cleaning your room and washing your penis are considered to be brilliant new ideas. If you aren't an idiot this book has nothing for you. If you are then I guess it isn't bad.

Its good, his expositional writing is pretty concise. The analogies can be weird at times but the general jist of the book is motivating

It's alright. It's an easy casual read. You can play the audiobook while cleaning your room.

It's not Peterson at his best, though. His lectures are more interesting.

It's a good gateway to his lectures which are themselves a good gateway to actually reading philosophy. Like other posters have said, its very basic stuff in this book but if it leads you to try reading Dostoyevsky then sure go for it.

>> No.12892816

Not really. I liked Jordan Peterson for a while but I found his lectures - particularly his pre-celebrity ones - to be his best work. He only dumbs himself down in the book. Maps of Meaning may be an interesting read but I don't think Peterson has all that much to offer. His strength lies in his ability to synthesize disparate intellectual traditions in a modern context. At the end of the day he's not much more than a shill for Christian values and moderate conservatism, but he is doing a good job keeping the old giants like Jung, Heidegger, and Nietzsche alive, and for that we should be grateful.

>But I had more tricks up my sleeve. I poked him in the chest, with my free hand, in a manner calculated to annoy. He didn’t budge. I did it again. And again. And again. Not hard—but not in a manner to be ignored, either. Ten or so pokes letter, he opened his mouth, planning to emit a sound of outrage. Hah! His mistake. I deftly inserted the spoon. He tried, gamely, to force out the offending food with his tongue. But I know how to deal with that, too. I just placed my forefinger horizontally across his lips. Some came out. But some was swallowed, too. Score one for Dad. I gave him a pat on the head, and told him that he was a good boy. And I meant it. When someone does something you are trying to get them to do, reward them. No grudge after victory. An hour later, it was all over. There was outrage. There was some wailing. My wife had to leave the room. The stress was too much. But food was eaten by child. My son collapsed, exhausted, on my chest. We had a nap together. And he liked me a lot better when he woke up than he had before he was disciplined.

It's a "self-help" book for socially retarded 16-year-old boys who want excuses to make their lives worse. It's wildly inconsistent gibberish trying to sneak in JBP's personal annoyances with women
and political revolutions while reminding his audience that they are strong enough and cool enough to transcend the rules he's placed on normies. He pats his tweepy teen fans on the back and reminds them that "the world is tough!" "women only want to humiliate you!" "if you are ever embarrassed or fail at anything, your brain will transform into a new 'beta' brain that can never succeed at anything!" "if you think society should be challenged, you are Hitler and Stalin, who were bad!" "Disney movies want you to think otherwise!" "You did nothing wrong except trust in society!" "Society is bigger than you and you're wrong to be mad about it!" It's just self-contradictory whiplash back and forth while referencing the same three books over and over. It's just a whiny handjob for his whiny fans—he will tell them what they want to hear—not like normal people in the real world, who will tell them they're pretty fragile obnoxious cretins with no social mobility and no lust for life and no future
