>Tolkien is the wen on the arse of fantasy literature. His oeuvre is massive and contagious - you can't ignore it, so don't even try. The best you can do is consciously try to lance the boil. And there's a lot to dislike - his cod-Wagnerian pomposity, his boys-own-adventure glorying in war, his small-minded and reactionary love for hierarchical status-quos, his belief in absolute morality that blurs moral and political complexity. Tolkien's clichés - elves 'n' dwarfs 'n' magic rings - have spread like viruses. He wrote that the function of fantasy was 'consolation', thereby making it an article of policy that a fantasy writer should mollycoddle the reader.

Woah...

Yet I still find his fantasy to far more profound then Meiville's Marxist inspired works. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Perdido Street station, but it lacks the timeless quality and sense of purpose that Tolkien has.

It's not the 90s anymore bud, this shit is stale af. Such a dumb fucking midwit. The typical 115 iq grown male larping as a nihilist intellectual to cope with his sexual deficiencies. Game of thrones allowed these types to show their faces in public again

The grat elves of the Silmarillion like Feanor and some of his sons or Galadriel were actually often pretty greyish character.

The fact that the whole elvish tribe of the noldo (the most important in the Silmarillion) is named by a word related to evil witchcraft (gul, as in nazgul, ins morgul, etc) is a very clever indication of it by I wouldn't expect our Chinese boy to pick up on that.

anyone who seriously uses the word arse in some sort of ranting diatribe is a fucking idiot

get the fug off lit

>noldo is related to gul
wait, what? can you explain more?
I've read a bunch of History of Middle Earth and never picked up on that.
I know that Tolkien, at an early version of the history, referred to the Noldo as Gnomes, and linked 'noldo' to "wisdom", or "those who know" (perhaps "knowledge"?), but never anything about evil witchcraft.

but none of this changes the fact that this OP pic-related is just EXTREMELY jealous of Tolkien.

He seems to come from the school of Bmthougut that sees literature as bad when it’s anything other than a commie parable. Brecht and Shaw are to blame for this. And one sentence of Tolkien is worth more than the collected works of those two depraved hacks.

This guy just seems petty, to be honest. None of the criticisms he puts forward are even right anyway.

>cod-Wagnerian pomposity

Gibberish

>his boys-own-adventure glorying in war

Bullshit. The horrible nature of war is stressed throughout lotr. And the battle of the five armies in the Hobbit isn't even described. Tolkien had actually experienced war first-hand, which I'm guessing this lad hasn't, so this isn't a very well thought out criticism

>his small-minded and reactionary love for hierarchical status-quos

Ah yes, I agree. The Return of the King should actually have ended with Aragorn abdicating to form a commune. The dispossessed orcs should have been given citizenship of the new LGBT friendly socialist state of Gondor in the name of diversity.

>his belief in absolute morality that blurs moral and political complexity.

Sounds like he didn't read the book, or didn't understand it. There's plenty of moral ambiguity, Tolkien just doesn't bend over backwards to stress it. For example, look at the treatment of the Dunlendings by the Rohirrim, who are the "good" guys.

>Tolkien's clichés - elves 'n' dwarfs 'n' magic rings

All things that are drawn from mythology. Tolkien just did such a good job of making them his own that every two-bit fantasy hack coming after him has used his template.
