I made this thread earlier today but I fell asleep and have nothing to do at work.

My "main" shelf is made up of just my philosophy books.

So let me get this right. You’ve got an entire shelf full of philosophy books, correct? And I assume you must have read at least some of them, correct? Now here comes the burning question, after reading so much philosophy how are you still so pathetic as to post a picture of your bookshelf on 4chan for approval?

I haven't posted my shelf, but I don't see the problem. I come to these threads because many times they've allowed me to find books that I find interesting. To answer a few things let's get this straight. Yes this is a entire shelf filled with philosophy and yes I've read about 70% of the shelf.

Pathetic? I wouldn't say so, I just enjoy looking at people's bookshelves and seeing what type of books others read and enjoy. I enjoy philosophy but posting my philosophy shelf on 4chan is in no way seeking approval from 4chan users.

Conrad is an excellent writer as he can build up a tense or discomforting atmosphere and deliver some interesting messages and thoughts along the way.
Too many dismiss him easily because they were forced to read Heart of Darkness in high school and rush through it, thereby missing a lot of the books contents.
Lord Jim is great and utilizes a pretty advanced narrative technique, while also offering a book where a Kurtz-like character is the MC.
The Secret Agent is one of the first books on homegrown political terrorism, but he mainly writes about the sea and coast as that is where he spent a lot of his life.
I'd start with the Heart of Darkness again for beginners and then move over to Typhoon or The Nigger of the Narcissuss.

i don't post in these threads, but you're just a moron.

you confuse philosophy with a total rejection of material reality. true, there are important strands of asceticism from which entire moralities are derived, but this is a subset of philosophy rather than its overarching standard.

ironically, its in part your gross ignorance toward the value of materiality that contributes a lot to the current climate of illusion and unreality: you are inadvertently, ignorantly, stupidly living out the fallout of the german enlightenment with unreflected upon comments like that

i liked it. it's a collection of his short journalism articles. i'd say quite a lot of the articles in it are fairly uk-specific so if you're not a britanon you might find it a bit mystifying. for example there's an article about ray gosling, the tv presenter who claimed to have killed a former gay lover in an assisted suicide, but turned out to be lying and was arrested for wasting police time and it pretty much ended his career. there's another article about the people who were caught cheating on who wants to be a millionaire, one about robbie williams being obsessed with ufos, etc etc.
if you liked any of his other writing like so you've been publicly shamed you'll like it. one problem with it is that the articles are not dated and there are no followups and i was forever googling stuff to find out the outcomes of things.

>>12561770
it's undeniably brilliantly written but really i found it a bit of a slog after about 300 pages. i guess i'm just not that interested in 19th century european infighting. an interesting thing about it is that every character except the central narrator was a real person. so there's a feeling of a kind of sinister thread of intrigue with this behind the scenes skulduggery affecting the outcome of wars and so on.
another interesting thing about it is that it has some illustrations pertaining to the story including some of the antisemtic newspapers that existed in france around the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. then on page 539... i nearly spat out my beer
