12549569 No.12549569 [Reply] [Original]

I spent 20 minutes hugging a fridge and an hour curled up on the floor wishing for death. What are some books that will make me stop hating myself and wishing for death? I’ve tried Platonism, the stoics and the transcendentalism.

>> No.12549594

is it actually death you wish for, or merely the end to the terror of death?

I desire an end to living would be more accurate, the idea of death is appealing but I will most likely fear it when it arrives.

Platonism won't help much unless you supplement with the Neoplatonist, otherwise Plato's works are incomplete.

Also, read about Pali Buddhism and Vedantic Hinduism. It may help.

Why do you think that it's awful advice? If OP has suicidal tendencies, then developing a metaphysical viewpoint could definitely help, since it makes the physical world less serious and significant. Also, Pali Buddhism is particularly helpful since it gives you tools to deal with suffering. Modern Buddhist movements are admittedly pretty bad and have lost the way. You have to go back to the origins.

I see this question often, and often I pass it.

A self-help book (whether it's unintentional or intentional) to drive out the nasty thoughts and give you an epiphany that you desire life is situational. Bringing out this desire to live is easy, people will recommend books all day long and you may read them all, but it will seem purposeless and this drive is squashed by a lack of direction or goal. The way I've found past this is to experience life outside your house: go to a local coffee shop, or diner, and read the book there. It's brutally cliche perhaps but do it, sitting in a dungeon will make you bitter. Take time with your books too, racing to absorb everything will exhaust you. Try to apply the symbology of the book to your life if you can, feeling a personal connection with the material gives a stronger feeling of change within yourself.

As far as books go:

Fiction: A Clockwork Orange

Non-fiction: Thus Spoke Zarathustra (unironically a nice follow-up to Bronze Age Mindset)

I’m a pretty social guy, but I often have a deep anxiety about interactions and often express the same dissatisfaction you are. Just dont forget somebody at all times is directing the course of conversation, usually arbitrarily. Just as anybody has the ability to strike up a conversation about anything (any of the dumbshit you hear people talking about on the streets all day), you equally have the ability to introduce something substantive and meaningful into a conversation and see how your interlocutors react. I’m not suggesting you go out like Diogenes or Socrates and purposefully nut on people. I’m just suggesting the principle of charity along with your own natural abilities to communicate effectively can help you get to where you want to be a lot more easily than you think. Social conventions are kind of out of whack right now anyways considering the increasing diversity/globalization of our enviornments.

>is there anyone who will teach me how to live easy life with the minimal effort from my side?
even if people recommend them really good books which help you to escape mind traps or just give you a very different direction of thought, such people have hopes that this book will solve, like, everything, while they are doing nothing. And of course no book will do, so in the end they get upset.
Such people read tons of books just to live the life described in the book, to have an illusion of change without an actual change, trying to fulfill the emptiness of the void in their soul without actual desire to remove this emptiness completely. Self-help book writers are very well aware of such kind of people and they constantly milk their money.
You can think you may help them, but as long as the minimum effort requires to reach the goal, they are helpless.

This I can agree with. The rest of your post is reaching imo.
>just to live the life described in the book, to have an illusion of change without an actual change
If they are changing the way they live their lives, even if it's mimicry at its' core, is that not real change? Their actions will be different even if their thoughts do not follow.
>trying to fulfill the emptiness of the void in their soul without actual desire to remove this emptiness
Doesn't the effort of spending hours reading a book and changing the way they live their lives imply the genuine and honest desire for improvement? Same for your next point. Doesn't this qualify as "minimum effort"?

Your initial point is valid imo but I feel like you're painting with too broad a brush and inferring too much.
