OP is partly right. Many of these men were driven into philosophy as a last resort or as an escape from real life. But their insights have become guidelines for many that came after them.

This is true but you have it backwards. Being ugly (and, more importantly, short) is what allowed them time to develop original philosophies and the ability to introspect rigorously. Thought is also a material defense mechanism, which is why there will never be a great tall philosopher. Tall people can rely more on inherent physicality than cleverness (to which short people must resort more often).

Historically speaking, there has never been a great philosopher or writer who was also tall. The only tall writers that I know of worth mentioning are Orwell and Wilde.
