But Kondo says her personal limit is 30, for her, and that different people are going to have a different limit. She basically just says to not hoard books that mean nothing to you and which you're not going to read, and instead give them away. Which is fine.

A few hours ago I watched the first half of episode 3 (or 4, whichever it was with the laughable stereotype gay couple). Some seem to have used books as a replacement to having a personality/interesting life or the have books out of vanity and show off their supposed intelligence.
Books take up space if you live in a small apartment, they can be expensive if you buy new and if you move, you've got to spend more money moving them.

It's common sense. 30 is a general number; the point is that, as you get older, you should necessarily be weeding out the things from your life that are no longer valuable to you, and keeping the things that are the most valuable to you. This is how maturity works.
