>dfw1 /lit/ no longer cares for David Foster Wallace
>dfw this board has become a place for engineering majors to talk about philosophy2
>dfw most anons have no intention of ever reading the meme trilogy3
>dfw anons only care about poorly reading a pdf of The Republic
>dfw anons keep claiming to love the west but don't engage in the western literary or philosophical tradition
1. A play on the common imageboard term tfw or "that feel when". "That" has been replaced by the informal "dat" to make the acronym the same as author David Foster Wallace's initial.
2. Inspection of "What's your major" and "What boards do you use" threads have revealed that most anons (those that post in those threads at least) are STEM4 majors and typically crosspost on /lit/ and /sci/.
3. Ulysses by James Joyce, Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon, Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.
4. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.

all of 4chan is suffering from the same problems. /pol/'s explosion has tainted the entire site, every single board is being overrun by /pol/tards who can't help but bring their alt-right shit into every single conversation they have on this site. Something as innocuous as a discussion on cycling in /n/ now will inevitably devolve into a rant about "jews" or "niggers".

the most ironic thing is that most of the posters are incredibly new to 4chan, but will pretend like this has always been their site to push their ideology. before /v/ started that gamergate shit, there was very little political discussion here. you had some conservatives, you had some communists and you had a majority of posters that didn't really care much for politics in general. boards that were innately more political, like /lit/, were often left leaning if anything.

/pol/ has done more damage to this site than /b/ ever could and I don't think we're ever going to recover.

>> No.12309771

>>12309571
/pol/ gets the blame, but that's just half the problem. People have to remember that eras are a sort of unique phenomenon in history without clear beginnings or ends. The example above of Paris in the 20's, San Francisco in the 60's (the high-water mark story by Thompson comes to mind) 4chan from 2003-2014. That era of which /lit/ was a part of was more-or-less dead the time moot quit. There was no saving it. It was just as much because of the retarded /v/edditors as it was with the people who spent their teens on /b/ and their 20's on /sp/ growing up and moving on. These sort of eras as a rule of thumb apply mostly to people of a certain age. The guy who was a college freshman outcast in 2003 when 4chan first went up is 33 now. Let's use as another example, the listless college freshman who discovers a love for literature as an undecided major and turns to /lit/ in 2010 when this board was created. He was probably browsing /b/ since he was at least 15, came on as a chanology newfag who killed /b/, but was a poster on the golden age of /lit/. He's 26 now, probably leaving a graduate school, no more connected to the 15 year old's of 2018 than our friend the orginalfag is to him.

In this view, the /pol/fags aren't villains as much as they are sort of tragic figures. 4chan lost its soul for good in 2014. Since then, everything has been just going through the motions. These people now who are 13-20 or so are trying to recreate the same thing that happened here five to 15 years ago , but the fact is that they are just sort of LARPing. There is no longer a cultural force on 4chan. It is sort of like a historical town that still pays people to dress up like it's the 1800's so tourists can go in and gawk and take pictures and look at the people living primitive lives. Nothing is being pushed forward, everyone is going through the motions. It is simply a place for redditors to go on vacation and say nigger.

While shrewd observations, there's many a cohort that wind up here for whatever reason and many more still lurk than dare participate. To some extent there's always an organic element that can't be quite generalized. Instead you can only lurk and try to understand that element's membership. There's a yearly, seasonal and cultural event driven periodicity to 4chan that make claims such as "it's shit and has always been shit," that reminds me of otherwise smart people concluding the economy is tanking because an index plummeted in measure.

What would you consider a non-indulgent way to write a novel? Novels are inherently self-indulgent.

>There is no longer a cultural force on 4chan. It is sort of like a historical town that still pays people to dress up like it's the 1800's so tourists can go in and gawk and take pictures and look at the people living primitive lives. Nothing is being pushed forward, everyone is going through the motions. It is simply a place for redditors to go on vacation and say nigger.

it's childish nostalgia, anon. 4chan is a means of communication. it did not magically attract some kind of wunderkind talent that made its early years a kind of cultural shangri-la, nor are its contributions ended because some anon "said it was so".
