Can someone here, say familiar with linguistics, explain to me HOW we know the essence of every word and phrase in language, despite it never being explicitly communicated to us as such?
Like, the word "indeed" is definitely pretentious, or at least can have such a tone to it. Yet, how do we know this? For the word is simply laid in a sentence as it is, like any other word, so where comes the pretentiousness? Same goes for the word "admittedly", and quite literally every word or phrase has an essence. But how is it we all, generally understand these?

One can say "usage", but how exactly is an essence seen from the way a word or phrase is used? How does "usage" work in the first place?

my take would be that it has to do with the nature of the English language itself. originally old English was a germanic language, with roman influence came the latinized alphabet and latin words were introduced into English through academia. when French became the European academic language, we received a lot of French vocabulary through the educated, literate class. by the time the printing press was developed there was a very big gap between spoken, everyday English and scholarly, educated English.

generally we think "big words" sound smart/pretentious but "big words" aren't necessarily big
compare house/abode, enough/sufficient, stockpile/inventory and so on, the latin/french derivatives sound more educated because they have NEVER been widely used in spoken english and were always written words in a sense. to speak pretentiously is to speak unnaturally with foreign vocabulary and grammar concepts (even the infinitive "to (verb) is to (verb)" structure sounds very gay because it's more germanic to say (verb)ing is (verb)ing)

I don't know the etymology of the word "indeed", but even though it sounds germanic in the sense that it's just in+deed, my bet is that it's a calque from a Latin or French phrase that was used by the academics and never in spoken English
