>"Genre fiction is just as meaningful and artistic as literary fiction."
>"Literary fiction is based on as many tropes as genre fiction."
>"Literary fiction readers are snobs and genre fiction is the future."

Why does it always seem to be Sci-Fi and, to a lesser extent, Fantasy readers who say this shit? I don't see Detective and Romance readers get assblasted like this except Jennifer Weiner

No offense to sffg posters.

Because science fiction is simply a vehicle to explore philosophy. Many of the best science fiction writers are also responsible for things like satellites ( Arthur C. Clarke ) and can usually be found somewhere in academia.

Romance and other silly genre fiction is pap at best.

Well, they aren't wrong. The distinction breaks down the longer you look at it, and just turns into a status signalling exercise.

Literary fiction includes many examples of genre and commercial fiction from the past.

And the people who try to write literary fiction explicitly as a means to enter the literary world or obtain serious literary accolades - are possibly the worst most insufferable people in writing. They are the politicians of writing. Commercial writers may be whores and businessmen, but at least you know they are going to keep their side of the deal when you hand over your money.
