You see, Margaret, when these people - when they try to ban books, do you really think it's about morality? Good taste? No, Marge, I've got to tell you, there's something else going on here.
These people - they don't think they're fascists. They don't see themselves as fascists. I mean, most of these people wouldn't have dodged the draft. They weren't your Lindbergh types, you know, your simps back home. These people would have been first in line to kill Hitler. The women, even, if they could fight. The homosexuals, if they kept it in the closet for the draft board. I mean, these are patriotic citizens. Good citizens. They think they're doing the right thing when they march up to the library with their picket signs, saying "ban Candide!" or try to keep de Sade out of the hands of our kids. Hell, I can see the reason for keeping de Sade off of shelves, even. But I don't sympathize with this kind of thing, Marge! We've got something called democracy in this country. Freedom. Liberty. A liberty that goes hand in hand with our other basic rights, life and the pursuit of happiness. I mean, really, think about it, what are these people doing? They think they're preserving life and the pursuit of happiness. But what about liberty? Where do we draw the line? Do we have to sacrifice one just for the other two? No, we don't. And I'm sick and tired of our local library kowtowing to these pressure groups in our town, Margaret, and you damn well should be too! Where's your sense of outrage? Didn't you protest for suffrage back in the day? What about letting in those refugees from Germany? We both know you didn't just stay home and let yourself be passive, okay with the status quo. Well, there are a lot of fishy things going on at the local level, Marge, and I won't stand for it! I work my backside off trying to earn a lousy nickel in this town, and I don't expect this censorship to be how I'm rewarded for it! This is America, the land of freedom, not Soviet Russia! And I'll be damned if I let any nagging organization of concerned mothers take anything off of our library shelves. Complete freedom for everyone, and I hope you're with me!
