How can people work such awful jobs and study such terrible things. I hate and fear the way nearly everyone lives. It can only be that the alternative is worse.

So people are just competing with each other to see who gets to escape hell and who doesn't, only everyone is actually in hell and some people just have a milder hell, and to push someone into hell so that you might escape is a hellish thing to do

What does this have to do with literature? Why are there more and more posts on this board that don't even try to feign tangential relation to literature anymore, that are little more blatant blogposts? Why aren't the mods deleting these inane threads?

>How can people work such awful jobs

People work for money, the jobs are usually awful because society and existence were poorly thought out, and now we have an endless supply of unfulfilling work that monetizes off of the desire for people to be perpetual children.

>and study such terrible things

I can't say whether or not people study 'such terrible things', the only terrible fields of study are ones that are useless and lack intellectual depth.

>It can only be that the alternative is worse.

The alternative isn't worse, people just don't know how to make things better.

The point of my post was to show that not everyone who gets a STEM degree and becomes a scientist gets to "explore how the world and universe works." I wouldn't have had to spell that out if you didn't have the reading comprehension of a 1st grader.

This. I quit science when I figured out how boring actual science was. I'm sure there are cool moments for some, depending on what you do and how good you are at it, but it's like a longwinded baseball game in that respect, plodding along and along and along until something happens. And here I was wanting to solve the universe. Youthful naiveté!

Most jobs suck. That's why they're jobs. They're things that are difficult or unpleasant to do that must be done and so people are compensated to do it. Countless human lifetimes have been whiled away in pointless labor.

The system trots out pop stars and supermodels and lottery winners and actors and other outliers as fodder for hope, in the expectation that if you see good things happen to other people you can still believe in the system and strive for the same to one day happen to you.

I got news for you bud. Statistics is not on your side. Hell, statistics isn't on my side!

No, I was just an avid reader and researcher of science. Academic desk-joby science I can do. I was the one leading the paper write ups and giving chalkboard lessons. I just didn't enjoy applying the scientific method outside my head. I'm a very good theoretician though and got some praise in that role. It's just less well defined employment wise.

I work in finance and hate every single moment of it. My only recourse is escapism in literature and thought. Time spent grappling with the Sickness Unto Death is less time to contemplate robbing the misbegotten underclass to marble my employers.
