mana follows the description in the bible in a lot of ways. it's a resinous substance that falls from the skies (though like shooting stars as opposed to snow as the text suggests). A piece the size of a grain of rice can be consumed to accomplish a minor feat of magic, like feeding a person for a week or throwing a fireball.

However, mana is a surrealist environmental hazard. Large quantities dispersed over a wide area, such as those caused by a substantial strike can cause a landscape to turn to fabric or cause trees to start sprouting lightbulbs. As a result of this, much of the cast are now living in an environment where the local wildlife is too bizarre to be edible and have to use the rare pieces of mana big enough to see as a food supply.

Why does mana turn stuff into basically end products? If it can be used to alter reality and isn't manufactured by humans, it should probably just turn things into primordial ooze or make trees grow in fractals and shit. If it can turn nature into man-made objects, it should have some sort of connection to a shared consciousness between humans and have some sort of primal mind (no consciousness) of its own to justify somehow knowing what fabric and lightbulbs are made up of.

The one two punch of Jordan then Sanderson who I only read because he got hired to finish WoT has me swearing off unfinished epics.

>> No.11924582

>>11924571
I've only just started WoT, but ASOIAF has turned me off from unfinished epics. My partner got me into Sanderson, and neglected to mention what I was getting into.
I'm reading WoT to help pass the time, but I'm having a hard time at times desu. The books are so very long, and not much happens in each installment. They could be easily trimmed by 25–30% and be only better for it. Jordan was a very wordy man.

>> No.11924590

>>11924582

How far are you? Book... four? had a plot twist so neatly done it turned the whole series around for me. And Eye of the World was very slow. Partially because it was a lot of Jordan going "and we'll see this again in five books, and this in eight, and this in three, and this was a red herring" and such. After book six was the real slog. But I was so invested by then I was more willing to just roll with it and enjoy the world.

>> No.11924593

>>11924590

Also, while Sanderson starting such a huge project as the Cosmere is aggravating since he suckered us all in, at the least it's comprised of many smaller mini stories that can have satisfying ends.

Still, I remember reading the fist Mistborn after Elantris "wait, a magic pool thing again? This guy doesn't have a lot of idea.... aw fuck."

>> No.11924602

>>11924590
Very early on, about halfway through the second book. I'm committed to finishing this thing, as it's a veritable prerequisite in fantasy literature, but Eye of the World was a pain in the ass to read.
300-thousand words was far too much to say what was said. Does he get better, or is every book suffering from so much fat that could have been trimmed?

>> No.11924617

>>11924559

I've got a detailed explanation but I'm not sure how far I'll go into in the story. The short version is that the waxy stuff isn't actually the mana per say, it's something that forms around when exposed to air. Mana itself is a soliton with negative entropy, and an attraction to areas of negative entropy, such as living creatures. It usually finds its way to the brain because the brain has the highest heat output of any body part. For some reason, mana tends to react with particular potency to brain waves, amplifying them like an antenna. These can in turn effect either the body or the surroundings in potent ways. What a person can do with mana often depends on what the person is passionate about, but hunger is one thing that everything has strong feelings about.

So yeah, it's basically psionics.

Yeah, Eye was a huge slog. You're just not used to his tics as a writer yet. You just don't care yet. Things improve as Great Hunt goes on. Things start to click throughout it. Especially the finale. After that I started to really feel the "tell me more" buzz. Third is solid, fourth was the big "what the fuuuuck" moment. By then I was pretty hooked. Like I said, six or seven is when the real slog the series is very known for starts, but by then it's a comfortable sort of mess if you can let yourself get a bit lost.

Joel Shepherd's Sasha.

I know, I know the cover and the blurb don't look appealing but the actual book is nothing like them.
I know Renegade by Joel Shepherd is highly regarded by some people here and you can expect about the same quality of writing from Sasha. It's a book that is deeply political and often times very philosophical set in a rich world. I strongly recommend reading it, even more so if you're looking for good female protagonists.

The Rook and Liveship Traders are also favorites of mine.

Robin Hobb, Garth Nix, Ursula K LeGuin, Lois McMaster Bujold and Terry Pratchett all do femanon characters well. Worth checking them all out.

The protagonist is one of the monster bounty hunters that fights the things that try to rise up. The plot involves a few factions around him fighting over some MacGuffin that they think will let them become masters of the lower worlds again. Hoping to be done with the first draft by December.

Those original stories definitely have their fans and have been a big influence on lots of writers, but I personally found the character of Elric to be pretty boring. Moorcock wanted him to be the 'anti-Conan' and that's exactly how he feels to me: emo and dull. But I've only managed to read two and a half stories so maybe he gets better? I dunno. I think Elric is like a coin flip for most readers: some will love him and some won't. I HIGHLY recommend the French comic adaptions though. The art is beautiful and Elric isn't boring at all in those.

Aliens coming to conquer a fantasy world that has different fantasy races, but humans are the preeminent race and the other races help the aliens destroy the main human empire since the other races hate humans for being the most powerful and wide-spread. Sort of like what the Spanish did to the Aztecs with the smaller tribes the Aztec oppressed. And the story would be set AFTER all of that happens; so it's like a post-apocalypse story in a fantasy world where humans are the outcasts trying to survive in a world now ruled by aliens and the other races of the world who hate them. Also the aliens would be more of a fantasy version of aliens as opposed to having flying saucers and laser guns and shit.

Because of the uniformity of the genre. The good folks at whichever house publishes this crap have read it, saw how bad it is and accordingly labeled it and marketed it to a certain demographic. Everything, from the artwork, the blurb , the other authors commenting on it is designed to sell it to that demographic.
