What's a good introduction to architecture?

How do I stop being the "nice brutalism" guy and start actually learning about architecture. I have a chart but none of it seems to apply to someone that knows literally nothing about it. I'd like to be able to be more descriptive in my writing when it comes to architecture.

Here's the chart by the way.

Personally I find I learn best about these things by diving into my personal interests with the subject. Are you fond of any particular architectural styles?

I mostly enjoy the more artsy, modern styles. I'm in it for architecture as art more than function.

I'll also add that I'm looking to know more about styles in general, I think one of my problems is that I can only describe what I enjoy as "modern" and "artsy" but couldn't tell you what any piece of architecture actually belongs to.

>I'm in it for architecture as art more than function

this attitude is what has given us the endless, inhuman glass cubes that litter every big city

Isn’t it the opposite

I'm going to second OP's question but be more specific/demanding: what one-volume book can I get that will allow me to look at a given building and say 'oh yeah, that has baroque written all over it' or 'ah, 70% gothic revival with a smidgen of neo-classical' or similar clever things.

Obviously I assume no one book could be nearly comprehensive enough, but I'm sure people must have tried with varying levels of success.

Function and beauty go hand in hand. And by function I mean their function in the context of the whole city, not just their individual function. Big skyscrapers leave pedestrians in the shadows, looming over them at an unfathomable scale. They also promote more highway development, more vehicle traffic, ruin the skyline, etc.

Gonna selfbump just once. I'm really interested in learning about this, just lost on where to start. I'd like to be able to spot architecture and recognize its style, what movement it belongs to or derives from, kind of like what >>11921368
said.

architecture in minutes by susie hodge seems okay for this purpose
