Is this as bad as /lit says? Be honest, did you like it?

It's probably fine if you're a kid.

>> No.11885648

The kind of humour in those books does get a bit stale and tiresome after a few hundred pages.

quirky English XD. DAE Stephen Fry?

>> No.11886205

I liked it but I read it as a kid, a decade before Reddit was even created. Would probably hate it if I read it now.

fun high school read, that's about it

also good reference material for hitting on pseud chicks, makes them feel smart and important when they get a Literary Joke

>> No.11886238

>>11885642
It's not. The pseuds just cant distinguish a book from its readers.

I only read Pynchon

good for slight chuckles, not really great literature. It gets boring after a few pages. That being said, if you're looking for comedy, you should try pic related.

>> No.11886299

It's fine. The backlash here stemmed from /lit/ trying to separate itself from anything popular, especially Reddit popular. Like Slaughterhouse V, it's a book you can read quickly and is popular with people who don't read as a hobby because it's surface-level accessible.

The jokes get old; the fanbase is insufferable; and Adams was never interested in the formal experimentation that gets most of our dicks hard; but it also only takes like an hour to read and it's occasionally clever and often thoughtful. So net positive as far as I'm concerned

It's like reading a script from someone who dreamed to write for the Monty Python. It's just a bunch of apathetic misunderstanding situations for this of that character. After the fifth joke you get it.

as an actual hitchhiker I thought it sucked.Towels use up too much volume when packed into a hiking pack and that waste of space makes it impractical. It was a fun read but it was just a hollow story that doesn't get into the depths of the human condition.

yes, but

yes

I liked h2g2 a lot when I was a kid

Though I think Dirk Gently is a better book, it's more subtle

>> No.11886805

A lot of the jokes are genuinely really clever. The problem is that there's too many of them crammed into each page. It feels like every sentence is the setup to a punchline in the next sentence, which is tiring to read after a while. Worth reading but not all at once for that reason.

>> No.11886818

It’s better as a radio play.

>> No.11886829

the first book is fun, but everything after it starts becoming redundant.

it was fun around 14-15
the jokes are great, but the plot is ridiculous.
think of it more as a comedy sketch show in book form.

>The problem is that there's too many of them crammed into each page
I disagree, that's something I really like about it. The rapid delivery of jokes makes it feel very energetic, basically the opposite of a tiring read. Almost every line either gets a laugh, raises investment in wanting to read the next line, or both.

>> No.11886864

I kind of enjoyed it but it does get tiring after a while.

>> No.11886905

>>11886832
Yeah, I would say it doesn't really have a plot at all, which is why I prefer Discworld (even though Hitchiker's has more jokes than Discworld).

/lit/ only hates it because of reddit
It's not /lit/erary, but it's fine. It's just irritating seeing nerds sperg out about it.

Stephen Fry audiobook, take it on a road trip

>> No.11887491

I unironically read it when I was in early middle school/elementary school because my friends parents gave me an unabridged copy of the whole series and I thought it was really good at the time.

It's a lot of fun, especially for younger readers, and there are a number of genuinely clever sci-fi elements. I think people like him less now because he (and a few others) helped launched a style of humor that is a little overused now, especially online. But that style is overused precisely because it is humor that translates really well to the page. When I read the series at 14/15 it was a huge thrill. The fact that I didn't like it as much as an adult isn't surprising but it isn't especially damning either.

>> No.11889243

no it isn't. it's a funny and light read, with some truly hilarious segments.

Not high literature, but it's entertaining and at least it's not harry potter
Also the movie is underrated

>> No.11889764

1-3 are fine, 4 and 5 are disappointing. If you are committed to reading the series just stop after 3: the cliffhanger is superior to a disappointing conclusion poorly drawn out for the last book and a half

I loved it, and not as a child, but before Wikipedia was a thing. I do indeed carry a towel with me and try to remember not to panic. Then I loved this. Weird conspiracy stuff is fun.
