11777120 No.11777120 [Reply] [Original]

A friend of mine (weirdly, someone with strong Marxist sympathies) gave me a copy of Decline of the West and I kind of went down that rabbit hole. I've now ended up reading Man and Technics and a bunch of Guenon essays, and have grown more religious. The fiction I've been reading lately has mostly been translations of early 20th century Japanese stuff, and most of what I read coincidentally had themes about anomie, depression, loneliness, and social disintegration being caused by modernization (Snow Country, Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea, Some Prefer Nettles, The Setting Sun). I feel like the combination of all of this unscrewed my head a little, and I can't stop thinking about unpleasant things like the seeming inevitability of my country going to war in the next decade or the fact that the people I see when I'm running errands are just going through their daily routines without thinking about our civilization disintegrating. The worst part is that it feels like I can't do anything about it because I'm just one person. Am I misunderstanding things? I want to go back to being convinced that things are not going to get worse, or at least convinced that I can do anything about it as an individual. I've tried retreating into religion but I'm too worried that our children's and grandchildren's generations are going to have to bear the brunt of all of this if nothing is done to make things better. What can I read to fix this?

I have citizenship in the United States and Denmark. I'm barely identify with the latter at all because I find Janteloven and the current state of the Danish government disgraceful, but I still keep the passport for convenience in visiting my family members. I feel like an outsider in Denmark and often have trouble relating to other Danes. I love America very much, but I admittedly have my doubts about America's national mythology and have always felt like an outsider here as well.

I read part of this but couldn't finish it. I didn't care for much of what he wrote here, since I don't buy racialism. Cultural conflict makes sense, but the racial stuff seems a bit narrow and silly. I've encountered white Danish people who have gone full-on jihadi and I've encountered British people who have left for China and ceased to be British, and I've also seen nonwhite people integrate perfectly into Western countries. It clearly isn't to do with race, but with culture.

Cultural conservatism is a very admirable thing but nationalism is vile. I'm assuming your religious roots are Christianity. If you want roots, hold tight to God, if you're able to believe. I agree with you to a certain extent. Culturally the human race has been in a downward slope thanks to capitalism. However it is also important to note that since the 1950s the amount of literacy in the globe has diminished significantly, medicine has advanced and is more widespread, more people are climbing out of extreme poverty than ever.
To say that ''the west is dying'' is to needlessly minimize the scope of the argument to Alex Jones level of rhetoric.

I went through a similar phase around a year ago after reading Spengler and similar writers, but have since adopted a healthier attitude. Spengler emphasised the inevitable nature of civilisational decline, hence why he compared it to organic growth and decay. The downfall of a culture is written into it from its beginnings, and its triumphs will eventually cause its destruction. You as a single person are facing up against metahistorical forces and - if you have a conspiratorial tendency - global political/economic forces. You cannot stop them, and not even a single nation or several nations could reverse this cycle.

You have to disconnect yourself from modern civilisation as much as you are capable of doing, even if is this gradual, and if you retain connection to civilisation, use its resources for self-growth. This is the only way you will achieve happiness, and if your family also agree with you, it will ensure their happiness too. Also, since you are religious, remember that the cultivation and protection of your spiritual self is more important than your material self. Civilisations may come and go, but God is eternal.

I think industrialization was far more harmful than capitalism. I mean the two are intertwined, but the technology is what really changed everything, not the economic mode in particular. the USSR's planned economy didnt prevent its citizens from feeling alienated as fuck

It's the loss of the organic village or the neighborhood, filled with your relatives and groups of friends, that ties you to a place and a network of people that belong to that place. You will notice people who still have this are typically happier, so long as they arent mired in poverty or some other issue.

It is your attitude itself that is vile, as it offends the virtue of piety:
>I answer that, A special virtue is one that regards an object under a special aspect. Since, then, the nature of justice consists in rendering another person his due, wherever there is a special aspect of something due to a person, there is a special virtue. Now a thing is indebted in a special way to that which is its connatural principle of being and government. And piety regards this principle, inasmuch as it pays duty and homage to our parents and country, and to those who are related thereto. Therefore piety is a special virtue.

Many fascist leaders started out as communist union organizers. That said dont lose hope op. Realize that they cannot beat you but can only demoralize you to get you to not show up to the fight. Never yield and fight demoralization.

Also about retreating into faith. It helps to accept that God let us do this damage so far and will also give us the solution in time.
