Has anyone ever had a /lit/ professor that they just couldn't stand? I've only had one, but he was a bad one.
>Have guy for pre-Civil War American lit
>His doctoral area was "literature & social justice"
>has us read Hope Leslie (which is shit btw)
>he talks about how it was incredibly successful but those ebil academics don't want you to know that
>we get to Poe later in the semester
>he argues that, because Poe was not an abolitionist, the orangutan was a black man

I unironically dislike all the philosophy professors I've ever had. Especially the dept. chair, he's bitter, moody, patronizes the fuck out of everyone, has MLP figurines in his office, brandishes gnostic attire like rings and necklaces and shit; he probably posts here. English, Geology, German, Speech, History classes all had way more likable and healthy people.

In high school, it was this woman who was a passive-aggressive, condescending cunt who got fired after I left HS. Nothing remarkable about her other than that she was an asshole. In college, my Literature teacher was a super liberal guy who couldn't keep his political opinions to himself and recited nearly every cliche one could imagine about an SJW. He had us read absolute tripe from diversity quota authors. On the bright side, he made the class pretty easy. Other than that, all of my English teachers were good.

>Anybody gets to ask questions about any fiction-related issues she wants. No question about literature is stupid. You are forbidden to keep yourself from asking a question or making a comment because you fear it will sound obvious or unsophisticated or lame or stupid. Because critical reading and prose fiction are such hard, weird things to try to study, a stupid-seeming comment or question can end up being valuable or even profound. I am deadly-serious about creating a classroom environment where everyone feels free to ask or speak about anything she wishes. So any student who groans, smirks, mimes machines-gunning or onanism, chortles, eye-rolls, or in any way ridicules some other student's in-class question/comment will be warned once in private and on the second offense will be kicked out of class and flunked, no matter what week it is. If the offender is male, I am also apt to find him off-campus and beat him up.

I don't really like a lot of the philosophy professors at my school. Some are cool people, but others are completely enamored with the idea of them being "philosophers". They all have seemed to study one philosopher in depth and read literally everything in the world through that philosopher's lens.

That's what you do in the academy. You don't become a professor without specialising.

I attended a military university and we had this one super marxist professor who seemed to hate the military and everyone in the class. To this day I don't understand how he got hired or why he even wanted to work for an institution he clearly hated. If he wanted to change things from the inside he would have to do it more subtly because being a bitter cunt just turned everyone off of him.

>good chunk of grade based on online discussions where we make up a "real world" example of using a logical principle and respond to someone else's
>lectures all done with some class participation software though they were physically on campus
>also had remarkably little to do with the subject matter or quizzes and exams, honestly that happening with introductory logic is impressive
>literally about a third of the class dropped because they were tired of her shit (I checked university statistics for that class but all the grade distribution reports got taken down last month for some reason)
>she forgot about a quiz she gave earlier and I had to email her to factor it into my final grade
>her website features her Yelp account in the top bar

From what I can tell she's floated around a lot between brief teaching positions and she's looking for another position according to her site right now.

only one. English creative writing class I took for fun.
>Assigned books on how to write
>both by literally whos and she referred to them by first name
>would always repeat the phrase "bird by bird" and worked that into her regular speaking pattern
>I will never forget her saying "Words are like blissful children; let your children play across the page"
>always referred to writing as "the craft"
>said that there is no bad writing yet enforced proper grammar/punctuation on poetry
>would fawn over every women's work read in class, even the one that started word for word: "Fuck that bitch. My mother's a cunt' the nigger said as he shot up heroin"
>graded my assignments low Bs and never gave any specific criticism or how I should improve
>only class that kept me from a 4.0 cumulative GPA
this was the only class that I regret taking. It was very painful for me to even look at this professor for fear of what stupid shit she would say.

Man I'm not even sure if I should post this in case anyone can identify the guy, but it's the best "that one professor" story I have

We used to have this guy we called "the Cough Goblin"

>first year english literature student
>go to lecture on "irish women poets"
>lecturer is ten minutes late
>eventually we see a little stooped old man walk into the hall and up to the podium
>starts his lecture, everything proceeding as normal, some bullshit about menstruation, idk I used to just read through my lectures in first year
>this only a couple of weeks after the start of term, coming into winter, literally everyone has a cold
>someone in the hall coughs
>the Goblin stops what he's saying, looks around the hall
>eventually resumes his lecture
>moments later, someone else coughs
>he stops again
>looks like he's about to say something, but decides not to
>inevitably, after he's again resumed his lecture, there comes a third cough
>this time he can't contain himself
>starts to tell us about how people nowadays don't know how to "breath properly"
>claims he literally never coughs, because there's no need if you know how to "breath properly"
>after a ten minute diversion on the decline of breathing technique over the last fifty or so years, he resumes talking about another poem about having periods
>some nerds are trying to stop themselves from coughing, but most people are hacking to their heart's content
>there was a facebook groupchat for our course, which we used to synchronize coughs
>first groups of two or three coughing at the same time, then larger groups
>just few enough that it isn't completely obvious that we were planning it
>every couple of minutes he's stopping his lecture to rant about coughing and proper breathing again
>go off king
>at one point he himself starts coughing his guts up
>blames us
>two people sneeze in quick succession
>he almost gets up and leaves

He didn't even get halfway through his planned lecture

90% of the philosophy professors in my uni have psychopath eyes. Specially the ones that are more into political philosophy. The ancient philosophy ones are the most normal.
