I know this thread has turned sharply into troll territory, but I'm another vet (Aus, not US) and any parents in this thread should absolutely discourage your children from joining any military (barring the event of a real invasion to your home soil). I was in for eight years as part of a military academy contract. I'm not saying this because military life is evil, babykilling, imperialistic, capitalistic, or any of that stuff (which might well be true). You don't need to go anywhere near a battlefield for this advice to hold, because:

The bigger problem is that military life is just _bullshit_, pure fucking bureaucratic bullshit, and it will rot your brain and ruin your poetry. It's like programming in COBOL. After long enough you realise you're trapped between unserious jokers and too-serious career hacks.
