This board really loves the german philosophers, but why is there no love for this guy.

Aside from this board's addiction to "canonical" texts, what is holding you back from looking at reality directly?

This is what I mean ffs.
This board is obsessed with a handful of Germans.
When it comes to the Frenchies, there is the usual shitting on Derrida and Foucault and some obscure references to Deleuze and Guattari only to seem cool, but no real discussion.

Why the obsession with metaphysics but a complete lack of interest in modern literary critique.

His essays are incredibly interesting. His approach to literature is revolutionary and it affects how we revisit thinkers like the German philosophers today.
His ideas on rejecting canonization and institutionalization of specific works also opens up heaps of avenues to the reading AND creation of literature

People on /lit have no desire to discuss anything. It's just about who can reference more canonical texts. Nobody wants to bring a new perspective to anything.

And that's 100% fine. A lot of times that's exactly what you need until everyone is on the same page.

>Oh, I don’t wish little J. P. S. any harm! There where he is his fate is cruel enough! Since we’re talking about a homework assignment I would give him a seven out of a possible twenty and let’s not talk about it anymore . . . But on page 462 the little turd shocks me! The damned rotten asshole! What does he dare to write? “If Céline supported the socialist theses of the Nazis it’s because he was paid.” And I quote. Yes! This then is what this little dung-beetle wrote while I was in prison risking a hanging. Filthy little bastard full of shit, you come out from between my ass cheeks to soil me from outside! Cain anus ptooey! What are you hoping for? That they murder me! It’s obvious! Here! Let me squash you! Yes! . . . I see his photos, those bug eyes . . . that hook . . . that slobbering leech . . . he’s a cestode! What won’t he invent, this monster, so that they assassinate me! Barely out of my caca and he denounces me! What’s best is that on page 451 he has the venom to warn us: “A man who finds it natural to denounce men can’t have our notion of honor. He doesn’t even see those for whom he is a benefactor with our eyes; his generosity, his kindness is not like our kindness and generosity: it isn’t possible to localize passion.”

> I am forced to see J. P. S. only in the skin of an assassin, and even more, of a fucking police informant, cursed, hideous, a pain in the ass, rumor monger, a donkey in glasses. Here I am getting carried away! It’s not appropriate for my age or condition! . . . I was going to close here . . . disgusted, that’s all . . . I think it over . . . Assassin and brilliant? We’ve seen this before . . . After all . . . Maybe that’s the case with Sartre. An assassin he is, he wants to be one, that’s understood, but brilliant? Brilliant tiny turd of my ass? Hmmm? . . . That remains to be seen . . . yes, to be sure, that could blossom . . . make itself known . . . but J. B. S.? His embryo eyes? His mean and petty shoulders? That fat little gut . . . and philosopher! . . . that adds up to a lot of things

Because literally everything he was famous for was done better by others. His philosophy is inferior Heidegger, existential fiction was done better by Camus, and his politics is the most obnoxious form of stalwart communism.

If you talk to anyone who has any background in philosophy, they'll tell you that he's not worth reading. He's almost Ayn Rand tier in actual philosophy.

Nausea is better than both L'Etranger and The Plague - won the Nobel for a reason

Although Camus has a better overall literary oeuvre (essays, plays, etc) you can't discount Sartre's contribution to French lit even if his philosophy was kinda shit

Everything this guy said is correct. For what is worth, in actual philosophy departments (and I'm not talking about analytic, American departments) he is, at most, a very minor figure (the big figures of ""his movement"" being Heidegger and Husserl).

Also, early in his career, Foucault set out to destroy the milquetoast saccharine humanism that Sartre ushered in during postwar France, and Foucault entire succeeded. The minute Sartre was in his coffin he was supplanted by postmodernists who took his naive optimism for what it was: "terrorism."

>He misread Heidegger--everything which seems novel about his philosophy is better done by Heidegger. He is a philosophy popularizer most of all.

Yeah, Heidegger was also probably a Nazi that threw a friend and former jewish tutor under the bus.
A lot of his work is **heavily influenced** by taoist philosophy and the only reason we can take him seriously is when we disregard that fact. When we treat his texts as something that allows for infinite interpretations, as Sartre would have it, we can come to a place where Heidegger was incredibly innovative rather than looking at it as just another rip-off from based East Asian/South Asian (in the case of Nietzsche) philosophy.

Not what I am doing.
I just see a bunch of people here saying "Heidegger just did better philosophy", "Sartre just misread Heidegger" no specifics just regurgitation of what the the board generally likes to hear.

Sartre was constantly drugged out and in an open relationship with his wife(?) and just generally a weirdo. But that doesn't mean that none of his ideas were worth discussing. In the same vein, just cause Heidegger had his flaws, doesn't mean that we are ready to give him up entirely. What's the difference?

Sartre's early stuff is mega - essay on the emotions, transcendent function, peaks in being and nothingness, then becomes a commie (maoist lmao)

Shartre is not bad, I think if someone went to the trouble of curating his writings for stuff that's worth reading that would not be a waste of time. But my goodness does he drag the fuck on sometimes. He just won't get to the point. I have to sit through pages of his god damned one-off protologisms and coinages just for him to tell me the obvious.
Other times though I feel like he just has his eyes (heh) exactly on target.
