I just finished my novel, /sffg/. It's fantasy (which is why I'm posting about it here) but I like to think that it avoids the vast majority of the more pedestrian fantasy cliches. Anyway, I would like some advice on getting it published. I'm not a career writer (I have a well-paying job that is not in that field) so I'm not interested in trying to make a ton of money. I just want as many people to have access to it as possible. And, hopefully, receive some combination of positive feedback to make me feel better about myself and critical feedback to make me a better writer in the future.

My options seem to be:
1) Self-publishing on Amazon. Seems like the gold standard, but I have concerns about rights and stuff. I would like to be able to make the book available for free to anyone.
2) Wattpad. Free for everyone, but it seems like the community is mostly YA schlock, romance and fanfiction. My story is none of those, so I'm not sure if this is the best fit.
3) Webnovel. Also free for everyone but it seems like this community is mostly isekai or romance. Again, my story is neither, so this might not be the best fit.
4) All of the above--try to reach as wide of an audience as possible.

Any experience with some of these options or any other general advice?

>> No.11547440

>>11547406
I'd go for self-publishing on amazon. It's easier and broader, and although some of its books are bad, there's enough good stuff to make up for it and create a reader base. Try to find out the rights and if you can publish it in other stores as well, with the recent amazon stuff happening, being a hostage seems like a bad deal.

What's it about?

The main character's story is a simple enough one. Sort of coming-of-age, finding one's place in the world, hubris, pride, downfall.

The more interesting aspect is the setting--tribal culture, pre-civilization. Everybody can use magic and there is a lot of cool (in my opinion) stuff about how the ubiquitous presence of magic has shaped the society into what it is. How it's similar to our own world but also how it's very different. So there's some cool anthropology/sociology stuff there, although I hope that it's more atmosphere than anything else. There is also a lot of ecology as I built the ecosystems and everything that lives in them. I read more sci-fi than fantasy so I guess it's kind of like a fantasy setting with a lot of scientific thought put into it.

Okay basically imagine a character with the perfidious behavior and self-serving morals of Cugel from Jack Vance's Dying Earth stuff, but he's a Chinese guy who does wire kung fu with 「SPECIAL TECHNIQUES」. Prose is about the same as Vance too because the Chinese authors love that sort of flowery crap.

If it's Xianxia he will also spend a lot of time cooking magical pills that make him better at meditating to become more powerful.

A moronic claim, you've obviously never worked in any sort of industry beyond food service.

Things get thrown out, people retire. When the cold war started Sandia actually had to reverse engineer major parts of the Little Boy atomic bomb because the knowledge of how they were made was "need to know", the documents were destroyed for security after WWII ended, and most of the people involved had retired or gone on to civilian jobs because it was going to be a "new age of peace." Later on in the early 00s they also had to reverse engineer a material used in hydrogen bombs called "Fogbank" because everybody who remembered how to make it had retired in the 80s but it turned out that after decades of sitting inside nuclear bombs it had degraded and needed to be replaced.

Likewise, the US Army now has hundreds of tanks they don't want because Congress has repeatedly blocked the shutdown of M1 Abrams production because it would cost more and take longer to regain the institutional knowledge needed to build tanks.

Most of the people who designed and built the Saturn Vs are dead or retired. The companies that built them are defunct, have merged with other companies, or out of the rocket business (Martin Marietta for example now makes concrete), and the production methods back then are obsolete and no longer used in industry.

>Taking my hand in hers, I turned towards the Autarch. Glancing backwards, I saw Thecla’s eyes begin to water, her tears like golden sapphires against her ivory cheek. Gritting my teeth, I placed the back of my hand across her face and cradled her beautiful flesh. I wasn’t about to let a demon ruin everything. Everything I had worked so hard to protect. Ever since the death of my parents I’ve always felt this outrageous and tempestuous urge to protect the living, and I wasn’t about to let some freak ruin it all. Originias curse pulsed on the back of my neck as I took out my sword. A pain in the neck. Literally.
>“Hey, asshole”, I say defiantly.
>“Are you ready?” he smirked cruelly as he interrupts me. Taken aback, I ask in a tentative way,
>“Ready to what?” I barked back, my fists clenching.
>“Ready to die!”
>He rushed forward and yanked my arm out of it’s socket, but at this point I could no longer feel pain. I laugh. And then plunge my hand straight through his chest. Startled, he howled in trepidation and his alzabo tattoos convulsed, as the creatures below us hissed in a penurious attitude. But then, something happened. Something that I would never forget. Not even on my deathbed would I ever forget this. Even that moment when Autarch raped and tortured my mother, paled in comparison to this. Stuck inside this anfractuous maze, with my hand stuck inside the demon's chest, Thecla took a step forward and

Your problem is that you're reading too much good literature. Binge on some bottom of the barrel only-technically-not-a-fanfic shit or even just straight fanfiction. Once you see the bottomless well of fame and fortune plumbed by absolute retards who can barely string a sentence together let alone a plotline you'll feel less inadequate.

Personally, most of my inspiration to write comes from reading shit and thinking to myself that I could do better. That I HAVE done better and then thrown it out because it wasn't good enough. That the food in some restaurants is lower quality than things I've thrown in the trash.

Though probably most of your problem is just thinking about it too much. Basically you're a literature virgin, so you think everything is so goddamn important and difficult, when in reality it's about as formal and life changing as taking a dump.

She gradually employs more and more bullshit using her power (for example coating her bugs in contact irritants and poison, importing exotic and highly dangerous insects from around the world, using her bug-sense to augment her marksmanship to superhuman levels), including a few "cheats" due to interactions with other character's powers(for example genetically engineered giant superbugs, tinkertech equipment remote operated by insects flipping switches), but right up until the end of the story she's just using bugs and bug accessories. However, at the VERY end, she gets another cape to perform a super-lobotomy on her and forces her power into working on ALL living creatures, in addition to going absolutely batshit insane but that's barely any of the story.

And funny enough, got me to pick up the book. I've always liked Moorcock and figured that fantasy needs more weird shit.

I'm in the couple last chapters now and it's okay I guess. I like the characters, the setting's got a couple high notes (like bird people funeral practices), plenty of weird cryptic references to history and what's going on behind the horizon, and spaceships. The main character grows organically but still hasn't beem hugged. Kinda meandering, though - could've easily chopped out a couple chapters without losing anything from the story.

Oh, and the courage was inside of him all along, who woulda thunk.

Sort of? By the end so much has gone wrong that it's less "heroic sacrifice" and more "justified suicide". And everyone hates her afterward because she brainjacked them all into "heroically sacrificing" themselves.

You wanna go full on super spoilers? There's some interesting setting details that get dumped at the end, including what the "final battle" was actually fighting against and it's outcome.

Also, English pretty obviously isn't the author's native language (I think he's Indonesian or something). There are a few grammatical errors and clumsy wording.

A city ship plows onward hundreds of years into the unplumbable darkness at the edge of the universe to see if anything is on the other side. Tensions rise and a revolt causes the captain to continue his mission with a single companion. A few hundred years later (they regularly swap off using suspended animation for weeks at a time) he dies of a heart attack, alone in the blackness.
The prose is spare and riddled with typos. There's one on the very first page. I'm not sure an editor even read it cause there were a lot of places that spaces were missing and two or three words ran together. Overall somewhat depressing and no real payoff. 2/5 lizard heads

NASA had up towards 4.5% of the total federal budget back then, now they are at around 0.5%, and they have changed to having one or a few tasks to a whole bunch of them. We would have no problem to reach the moon again if we decided that to be the main goal. Instead we have a permanently manned station in Earth's orbit, we are collecting data for quantum physics theory, we're actively exploring the potential for extraterrestial life on Mars and Europa, landing on asterioids, inching closer to the Sun to get a better understanding of it, and a bunch of sattelites dedicated to anything from telecommunications to aiding research helping us understand our own planet.

We barely go a week without a new launch from somewhere in the world, the next planned launch is on Tuesday the 7th from Florida, and you are saying that we are unable to go to the moon today if we decided that is the most important thing we could do.

Not quite, the physics of the situation is kind of wonky it's hard to describe if you can't visualize that you're on the inside of a rotating cylinder and that the reason you feel any 'gravity' is because your body is trying to move spinward and out. When you jump you move spinward (at the same speed as the cylinder), but completely counter-act the force 'pulling' you out. Since there is no gravitational attraction or acceleration, instead of 'falling' you move spinward until you've traveled horizontally enough to run into the cylinder again which is arced and coming back up to meet you. If it weren't arced, you'd instead just fly away like you were released from a sling - from an outside perspective you're actually moving in a straight line but the cylinder gets in the way. This is why it feels kind of like you're in a gravitational environment.

>Right now their top posts are agreeing with some chimp that's crying about "eurocentric" fantasy and how there's not enough people of color.

cool fake news tovarish

>Hi everyone! Given N.K. Jemisin's recent tweets on the subject of diversity in fantasy, I wanted to share my thoughts on why I don't think we should see "eurocentric fantasy" as something negative and why it is perhaps dangerous to pigeonhole the whole of Europe into the same slot.

>First of all, I think that when people mention the term "eurocentric" they usually mean Western Europe. The culture of the West is much different to that of Central or Eastern Europe. There is still a lot to explore in the folkore, mythology, religion and cultures of Eastern European countries. One needs only to compare the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski (and he's by far not the only great Eastern European fantasy or sci-fi author, there is for example Stanisław Lem the author of Solaris) or Uprooted by Naomi Novik or the Children of Earth and Sky by Guy Gavriel Kay. The same goes for the history, just look at a country like Poland or Hungary or Russia and how many great ideas for books you could take from their pasts. Romania and the whole borderlands between Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Poland have so much to dig into.

>Another worrying issue is that of aspiring authors from Eastern European countries. Talking from personal experience, hearing that "eurocentric fantasy" is stale or boring or "mediocre" can create an anxiety issue. Some writers might think that readers will be completely disinterested in reading a fantasy set, for example, during the Swedish Deluge on Eastern Central Europe in the mid-17th century or a story set in 16th century Croatia. Maybe an urban fantasy set in Yugoslavia during the communist era? This anxiety or simply lack of motivation could be because of lumping together Western and Eastern European cultures into one pile.

>On an end note, I'd like to call out to those writers and readers interested in non-Western European fantasy. You need not look across the oceans for something different or foreign. Just beyond the Danube and Oder rivers.

>What are your opinions on this? Do you think it would be interesting to read more fantasy set in Eastern Europe?
