Because they're brainlet boards that don't enable discussion, just shitposting and memes. I remember going to /tv/ way back when there still were a handful of actual film discussion threads among the foot fetishism and shitposting, but with the evergrowing crowd of idiots posting there, the board was taken over by capeshit, sitcoms and dumb blockbusters, and the actual discussion was set aside as being "pretentious and tryhard". I don't see it happening to /lit/ any time soon, though, as the board is slower and there is not as much shallow low end literature to discuss as movies. I mean there are, but people won't make threads on 4chan about them...

I've only spent time on a few boards: /biz, /his/, /pol, /out, and /lit. At least as to those boards, the most regular "hate" I've seen is from /biz to /pol, mostly as in people from /biz saying "go back to /pol."

I feel like a few times I've seen people on /his (which is, after all the "history and humanities" ) discuss /lit, but usually it's mirin' the lit wiki http://4chanlit.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_Reading and asking why /his doesn't have something similar for recommended history reading.

Most of 4chan is far more adverse to /pol/ than /lit/ is. Bread & butter American liberals, basically. As you say, /lit/ is more nuanced. Arguably /lit/ is the only one with balanced and genuine views. As you either get edgy poltardry or screeching about >go back to /pol/ or 'bigotry' or what have you. Both are irritating and vapid. Of course, there's still plenty of both found right here.

I don't often see /lit/ mentioned on other boards. Fairly rare. /lit/ isn't exactly a popular board. Even when literature is duscussed, its somewhat unusual for /lit/ to get a mention.

new to /lit/ what's the definition of self help books here and why are they so hated, because to me a book explaining the biology and biochemistry of meditation is a self help book and so is 12 rules for life - the only valid critique I've heard of self help books is that 12 rules for life repeats stuff said in a lot of books but I don't see why the entire genre is hated

Most boards don't care about /lit/ at all considering most people on this site don't read or have an interest in literature.

Anytime i see /lit/ mentioned on other boards it's just to call /lit/ elitist/pretentious and that's it.

This is a pretty accurate post.

Frankly, the board closest to /lit/ in my opinion would be /k/. Both are fairly neutral and balanced, with fairly strict adherence to subject matter, at least when compared to other boards. The major difference is that /k/ has more of its own culture, as in quantity.
Both have a contempt for /pol/. That said, both in general tend to have more 4chan-centric viewpoints, in my opinion, which tend not to be very "progressive". This might have something to do with the fact that weapons/militaria and literature are fringe subjects to normalfags, so anons on both boards are similarly alienated.

From my experience self help books rarely help. The give you a bunch of tips that, really, you already knew about, like go outside and talk to people, clean your room, go after your passion, and so on. Reading them will make you feel like you are engaging in self improvement, but more often than not will only make you TALK to others about the points the author made, instead of practising them. Again, this is my experience with people who read that sort of stuff. But I don’t really consider a book talking about the biological changes that meditation brings to be self help.

What annoys me most is just the general attitude of those threads, though. Few there seem to think of literature as something enjoyable and moving, most seem to only care about how it will improve them as people.

oh that makes a lot of sense, I see diet books the same way for the most part, my sister reads them all the time and hasn't tried a diet for more than a day, I see anything that makes me think or will impact my life in a positive way as self help, in my eyes no longer human was a self help book - I can also understand the part about people wanting to use books instead of enjoy them, thanks for clearing it up
