11478098 No.11478098 [Reply] [Original]

anyone read this? I was kind of surprised at how well written (even if a bit simple) the story was. Not to mention the DFW-esque ghostwriter, which felt like a nice satire of the pseuds on this board.

listen, i think thought norm is the funniest guy but this book and everything on his twitter is awful. maybe he should have finished school?

That book was hysterical and I loved reading it.

Norm is actually pretty well read I think. Apparently he read a lot of Dostoyevsky and Faulkner.

that doesn't make you well read though does it.

He also has mentioned Nabokov and Twain. I think the implication is that he's done a lot of reading and has read some upper level stuff. He's obviously very bright. His comedic role involves playing the fool but I was never deceived by that. He's very clever.

>> No.11478357

>>11478331
he's read a bit but if you look at the sort of stuff his says with regards to philosophy it's clear he's not very clever. i think he's really funny and he's not stupid but if you were to compare him to other writers it's obvious

i think it's like how people think woody allen is very clever
but he's not really is he

I mean philosophy is gay. I don't know why anyone would take it seriously. He's a comedian. He specializes in comedy. I don't see why he would use his intelligence to do philosophical enquire. Some people focus their intelligence on other things.

yeah, i basically agree with you. but norm takes it seriously.

Maybe you're right. It's hard to tell I guess. I think I've only seen him be serious once and not play some type of character lol

About a quarter into it so far.

What was the story with the squirrel and Old Jack about? Was that Norm trying to hint at abuse he suffered as a kid or was he just fucking with us gonzo style?

one of my favorite books, every page has a laugh.

The ghostwriter is a satire of pseuds but it's also clearly how norm views himself, attempting to write. It's referencing the masculine "norm persona" and making fun of him (him being the actual norm in the book). Surprisingly self aware and very funny book

Why would you be surprised? Norm has read more books than you have.

It's a joke because he paints the picture of a humble down to earth guy who lived through war then ruins it by implying he got raped by him.

Could you elaborate? I never picked up on this.

I think Keane the ghostwriter is supposed to represent norms inner self in a self-deprecating way. Norm has written on Twitter about how he's writing two new books (after this one) and he loves Russian literature and clearly loves old-styled storytelling. So I took Keane as a manifestation of his buried, less-than-manly creative side. Keane really desires to be known as a great writer but is stuck writing 'celebrity memoirs'. Even the way Keane used to be 'Charles Manson' is kinda a riff on destroying yourself.

Then you have the fictitious norm macdonald character, the main character, representing how norm thinks the public views him, an absurdly masculine washed-up has-been chucklefuck.

So it's a pretty interesting take on the way norm perceives himself. One of the new books he's writing is with a pseudonym apparently, can't wait to read it.
