I really liked the magic in Black Magician trilogy. It had rules and limitations that could be clearly explained, but it wasn't this whole elaborate "system".

If the author obviously never put any real thought into it and just lazily cobbles together vague ideas and never explains or explores them so he can make stuff up as needed, I get pretty sick of it. Raymond E. Feist was notoriously bad at this.

I've read Shadowmarch and I found it a lot more enjoyable than MSaT.

Those were literally my favorite part of the whole series. I loved the tangled mythology and piecing it all together from the three different versions, I actually drew relationship charts to sort out who was who with the different names for each god.

Probably just a difference in what we look for in fantasy. I look for amazing world building and mythology, and Tad Williams generally delivers on that. He's big on fairies and mythology so I love almost everything he's written. I just think he takes a while to get started.

Well I'd say the Vorkosigan saga is a multi-generational space opera series that's mostly about a guy who was crippled before birth by a chemical weapon attack, because of his physical disabilities ("bones of talc") he's gotta win through smarts and guile, and ends up in his planet's intelligence/security agency instead of the military because of this. So the series follows him through about 30-40 some years of his life, along with a few side-stories about other characters and his parents.

Quite honestly it's got some of the best character writing I've read in scifi, it feels like the stories are about people rather than characters.

Like you said I feel the more recent Miles stories have been a bit stale, and I think maybe he's being "retired" from the spotlight in favor of supporting characters now that he's older. Like somebody said in the last thread, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance is one of the best books in the series, and IMO the better parts of Cryoburn (which I didn't like much overall, like Cetaganda it just felt "meh") were the ones with Armsman Roic.

Moiraine though is an adult, her age is just hard to determine because she is Aes Sedai, they have an "ageless" look about them, which can make a woman in her 60s seems maybe in her 30s. Moiraine looks about the same age as Nynaeve and Egwene but she's considerably older.

As far as web novels go, it's darker in tone and the author actually cares about prose (not to say it's anything to write home about compared to published works) so it has a cult following.

If you want to read a web novel that's not poorly translated, and a plot that's edgy and fit for a 12 year old's diary, but also takes itself seriously and isn't filled to the brim with dumb one-liners, it's definitely worth a shot.

It's not good. It might appeal to some people but the author has very obvious hangups about a number of things. The story contorts to make these hangups not only very visible, but also to make them right. The most obvious of these is his idea that authority can never be trusted. Because of these hangups the series unironically deserves the label "grimderp".

Leaving all that aside (though you shouldn't) the powers all come with a manual, the action isn't written all that well, etc.

I read a ton of Feist's stuff as a teenager, I loved the Riftwar Saga and Serpent War saga but I kinda burned out on the stuff after that. Still have like 15 of his books on my shelf. Best thing he wrote was that trilogy Mistress of the Empire he cowrote with Janny Wurts, way less magicians and renegade princes, way more political intrigue and sex. Feist's non-Midkemia stuff can get pretty raunchy I found out to my surprise, so it's weird how tame his mainstay fantasy series is.

I feel it is. While technically/theoretically a government DMV clerk or social worker can vote too, pretty much all we're actually shown in the book implies the government is effectively a military junta.

Civilians, while prosperous and happy (as far as we know, Johnny Rico is from a wealthy family), are essentially kept in a "societal terrarium" while the party, formed and staffed by federal service vets (after WW3 was started by "moral decline" IIRC) provides the Guiding Hand of Dear Leader. The Skinnies and later the Arachnids provide the outside threat of "the other."

But on the other hand, again anybody can join the Federal Service and get a vote. So perhaps if not true fascism it's a elitist form of pseudo-fascism.

Either way I view the book as a good way to explain why fascism appealed to people before WWII, and it works too well in that role to make me think Heinlein didn't intend it.

Just finished Vandermeer's "City of Saints and Madmen" and i have to say i enjoyed it quite a bit, very strong exercise in world building that never falls into the trap of going too far up it's own ass. It's continuously peppered with interesting stories that follow a line of beginning by being interesting by virtue of the strange fungi filled squid depending city of Ambergris and then develop into unsettling mysteries that hint at a hidden malevolent world much like Lovecraft does.

Particularly of note is the creativity of narration in the book as Vandermeer tells stories trough art critiques interspersed with conventional story telling, history guides with copious footnotes which give the historian narrator plenty of personality, he does some sort of parallel storytelling where one story is told while the narrator (on the sidelines) details the backgrounds of the fictional authors and illustrators of the story and most notably when he rewards you for reading an extensive fictional bibliography by hiding within it the fate of the character that's been narrating the story so far.

It's imo super clever but i reckon it might be annoying or just gimmicky to some. Very clearly influenced by Borges' sort of metafictional brand of storytelling with stories nestled within stories, essays and reviews although Vandermeer never gets as dense as Borges.

If i can fault the book for one thing is by starting with one of the weakest and longest entries, that being "Dradin, In Love". I even dropped the book 2 times previously because of this drag of a story.

Just finished the Once and Future King. Hoped for some chivalrous knights and glorification of Arthur. Instead got 5 separate books that are so different in their style(due to the author somehow changing so drastically in how he wrote over the couple of years he wrote it and being an edgelord who couldn’t separate his own views from the general idea of Arthurian stories). The first 3 books are excellent, the last one is a literary breakdown on the author’s behalf. The idea of Arthur as a character that was forged to end war is very compelling and I honestly thought it was well executed early on but failed in the latter parts as I previously said.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the book? Feeling pretty jaded after the last section.

I can only guess that in writing the last book of his trilogy Rothfuss realized he had no more ideas. He'd put everything into this series and ran out of steam before even finishing it. If he published all three books that would be it, his career would basically be over because he'd have nothing left. But what if he never released the third one? What if he kept people constantly on the hook waiting for him to finish the series? Then they'd HAVE to care about him and invite him to cons, he'd never lose his relevance even if he no longer had any ideas or capacity to write any more fantasy.
