11434173 No.11434173 [Reply] [Original]

Anyone here have any recommendations for books/biographies about "interesting" intellectual or historical figures? I recently finished Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius and enjoyed it thoroughly. I've been trying to find books that tell the life story of John Von Neumann and Oppenheimer, things of that nature.

Stephen Kotkin’s biography of Stalin is pretty interesting. It gets (predictably) bogged down when Kotkin details the creation of the Soviet bureaucracy, but it’s worth muddling through

Galois bio-novelization by Leopold Infeld, a physicist and Einstein collaborator. he was a commie, so he glorifies french republicanism too much, but it's still interesting for mathematical readers.

there is just some uncanny valley stuff going on there. A few minor tweaks and she is a 9 or 10, she is even quite up there as is, 7, 8, 8.3, 8.4, 6.9..
but yeah, maybe just bad shot, not my type maybe, looks a bit like a little (annoying) fiesty dog, doesnt look comfortable, mister potato head parts placed on, doesnt look like the parts mesh naturally.

maybe I just realized what this image subconciously reminded me of

Horowitz and Colliers' biographies of the Fords, Rockefellers and Kennedys are excellent.
There are a few biographies of Oppenheimer, though I have personally only read one - "Brotherhood of the Bomb" by Greg Henken. It explores the lives of three Manhattan Project scientists - Oppenheimer, Edward Teller and Ernest Lawrence.
My favourite biography that should be of interest to anyone into literature and the Manhattan Project is "The Brothers Vonnegut" - Kurt and his older brother Bernard both worked at General Electric for a time. Kurt wrote press releases under a pen name, and Bernard was an atmospheric scientist who worked on some of the first experiments in weather modification - cloud seeding, hurricane manipulation etc.
