I've only read the synopsis, but it seems like the most uninspired dystopia one could think of. It would be as if someone wrote a book about immigrants taking all the jobs.
She's gone and picked a hot current issue and exaggerated it to appear terrifying and alien and the result is a book that garners hype now by masquerading as the profound, when really it's a shallow piece that'll be forgotten completely when the whole "third-wave feminism" thing comes to its conclusion.

>> No.11411151

Consider why 50 Shades of Grey was so popular. Women don't read those books because it's insightful commentary on modern misogyny, they read them because secretly that's how they want to be treated. Women love being dominated, I'd say around 90% of them who read the Handmaids Tale do so because they like to imagine themselves being in that situation

>> No.11411168

i haven't read this book, i was just readig the thread for fun, but it is making me cringe! of course its diffiuclt for girls not to think about mysoginy in a literature class when so much literature seems to be written by, about, and for men (although it doesn't stop me from reading them, it is a bit sad sometimes that all my favorite books are so dude-centric). & not all girl writers are so bad, i realized i really like pulp novels where the woman wrote under male-pseudonym lots of cool lesbian stuff in those. and djuna, virginia, zora.. they all have some cool elements to their writing
sometimes i get tired of reading about male sexual frustration, and a lot of your guys' favorite books seeming to be just like that.
but i must say honestly i would rather talk to you fellows than to anyone who only wants to focus on the feminist type arguments, especially not the over-zealous male feminists. you guys are so mean, but probably more interesting to talk to than neo liberal people.

Bait aside, why are you bothered about so many books being about unrequited love from a male perspective?
Unrequited love, fear of death and the meaning of life make up the trilogy of the most important topics in life. I know most chicks are in love with their own sexuality to the point of narcissism as a defence mechanism to low self-esteem so why are you bothered, is it not raunchy, adventurous enough? Most women I know read to escape not to explore the depths of the soul, must be the imperialistic drive and passion that women lack.

dont you think that the male perspective towards love is just as narcissistic about sexuality as a lot of women's is? i kind of don't think there's anything wrong with that, i believe that it's a very natural part of existence (for women AND men). i genuinely love literature about these issues and as a woman i find pleasure in relating to the parts of a male perspective that i can understand within myself as well as those that are alien to me. and obviously many elements of these experiences are universal, and some are inevitably narrow. but i cant help sometimes feeling sort of bummed that there is just so much less classic literature from the female perspective simply due to like, historical systemic limitations. i just want to look through a more familiar lens sometimes you know?

>> No.11413231

>dont you think that the male perspective towards love is just as narcissistic about sexuality as a lot of women's is?
That's not what I asked, but generally speaking most men put their sexuality into other people, at least that's how the human race has been built. Men act, women recieve (or choose), the denial of that "action" is where the poetry lies, in modern society, women have the upper hand (their choice is above all law and deemed the final word. You can understand how I therefore assume that women are more narcisstic than men, because they have more power (at least whilst young and attractive, men are becoming more and more expendable.))
> so much less classic literature from the female perspective simply due to like, historical systemic limitations
I think this is the fault of the reader more than anything, Emily Bronte is one of the finest novelists ever and yet people would rather complain about why terrible female authors aren't being championed instead. I'm sure every great novel has a female figure in it too (Read Madame Bovary if you want the most direct perspective), people just complain that it's not a woman writing the book, which is to be honest, rather sexist. As if a man cannot understand a woman, it would be equally sexist to assume a woman cannot write about a man (see Bronte etc.)

Try and read things about subjects that interest you first and then focus on the authors. The great irony is that most female Romance authors tend to completely miss the point of 'what love is' and are then, dire. (At least from what I've read)

Chad is average to slightly above average height (177-187cm), has no structural or developmental deficiencies of face and body, reasonably lean, good healthy skin indicating youth, immunity and resilience. Notice that most albums by women musicians are almost entirely about boys. I was in a liberal arts program (yeah I know >.>) and these 3 girls formed a band and got a fuckton of hype, everyone was talking bout how they were inspiring blah blah blah, they released two albums and >>every song<< on both albums was about boys. Another friend in the program released an album of her playing the ukulele and it was named "Songs About Boys" and no it wasnt like some funny ironic thing.
FFS go to the farthest right you possibly can and you'll find Savitri Devi writing a book about how Hitler is a God. I haven't read Rosa Luxemburg yet but I got a fucking bad feeling about it let me tell you

Dalrymple unironically savaged her so badly I can't take anything she wrote seriously. I remember liking Three Guineas when I was younger...guess I "grew up"
