His novels were pretty much just Seinfeld scripts. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

gogogo, i'd like to know what people think of him too

Feels like someone who knew the 60's, 70's and 80's in America extremely well. When I read him, I had a fake emotion of recognition: like it was ME who had intimate knowledge of the sexual exploits of middle-aged jewish women, but really, I didn't (I'm European and know the US only through exported pop-culture).

Mildly amusing, some times, beyond that: eh

While his novels champion the American form of fiction, he was also integral to the furthering of world literature, championing politically silenced authors such as Milan Kundera, with Roth's attention to language and the art of fiction providing a rubric anyone could learn and read from.

Is Portnoys Complaint any good?

>> No.11355476

If you're under 22 it's gonna help kick your ass out of any funk, and it's one of the consistently funniest novels you can read. Jews really hated Roth for making them all look like that, but it's a big joke about coming of age stories in total.

>> No.11355485

Jews were already mad at Roth for writing Goodbye, Columbus. He wrote Portnoy's Complaint specifically to make a point about how he didn't care what they thought

confirmed for having never seen Seinfeld or never read a Roth novel, or both.

I taught "Conversion of the Jews" in my high school classes and the kids had a great time with it. hilarious story with a lot of depth.

Started reading the Human Stain this summer and am struggling to finish it. There are great parts throughout, but it often feels overwritten to the point of explicating its themes in too much detail. There are pages which could be cut out and nothing would be lost. Coleman Silk is an excellent character.

Where else should I go from here with his books?

Yeah, I love that Seinfeld episode where Jerry's daughter becomes a terrorist radical and blows up a post office.

It thought it was ok, a bit too pompous and ridiculous at times.
