but I feel like non-native English speakers have an easier time learning English than English speakers have learning their tongues. After all, aren't Germans and Frogs taught English at school compulsorily? i laugh at those who waste time by learning languages and despise those who get them as kids. They haven't earned them. They're freebies and it's not fair that I was born to mongoloid monolingual fucks. Learning a second language as an adult is a waste of time because none of what you learn about it by reading/speaking/listening is in anyway interesting edifying and self-improving because it's always so basic, which is the only actual reason why anythings worth reading. In he time it takes to become remotely fluent in a foreign language, reading extensively in the only way that lets you get some semblance of linguistic competency or speaking to boring fucks, you could read and reread and derive all the worthwhile benefits of native literature that for some bizarre and illthought reason you think is worth forgoing for the aforementioned time wasting shit that comes with slogging though a language course.

And Milton's translation is literal, practically in word placement and essentially in word choice. The idea that translations can't match the originals is only true when it's not a genius writing the translation.

I took french for 7 years in middle-high school, learned VERY little. I cannot even remember to conjugate basic verbs.

I've heard it said that it's as difficult as a modern English speaker try to read proper old English. But if you work gradually backwards (ie try to read the Canterbury tales first/koine) then the gap between that and modern English is the same as that between them and old English/the Ancient Greek dialects. So it's a matter of reading progressively older texts that can get you used to understanding it. It's not like picking up a completely unknown language, because it is possible to learn using only the modern form of the language as a starting point.
