Knowing more than one language isn't enough. Some people are bilingual simply due to the area they grew up in. As far as I'm concerned you're monolingual unless you've learnt at least one language that isn't spoken in your country. English doesn't count btw.

After all, aren't Germans and Frogs taught English at school compulsorily? They're freebies and it's not fair that I was born to mongoloid monolingual fucks. Learning a second language as an adult is a waste of time because none of what you learn about it by reading/speaking/listening is in anyway interesting edifying and self-improving because it's always so basic, which is the only actual reason why anythings worth reading. In he time it takes to become remotely fluent in a foreign language, reading extensively in the only way that lets you get some semblance of linguistic competency or speaking to boring fucks, you could read and reread and derive all the worthwhile benefits of native literature that for some bizarre and illthought reason you think is worth forgoing for the aforementioned time wasting shit that comes with slogging though a language course.

Кaк мимoлeтнoe видeньe,

This is one of my favorite stanzas ever, it sounds beautiful, and it expresses so much so simply, but it doesn't have the quality that French has in its more sophisticated stuff:

Elle éclate bien mieux en te laissant la vie,
Et je veux que la voix de la plus noire envie
Élève au ciel ma gloire et plaigne mes ennuis,
Sachant que je t'adore et que je te poursuis.

But they have a beauty of their own. The only thing they miss it on, if properly done, is the word music. And true literary geniuses can fix even that.

Horace and Milton's Ode I.5 is a case and point.

What slender youth, bedew’d with liquid odors,
Courts thee on roses in some pleasant cave,
Pyrrha? For whom bind’st thou
In wreaths thy golden hair,
Plain in thy neatness? O how oft shall he
Of faith and changed gods complain, and seas
Rough with black winds, and storms
Unwonted shall admire!
Who now enjoys thee credulous, all gold,
Who, always vacant, always amiable
Hopes thee, of flattering gales
Unmindful. Hapless they
To whom thou untried seem’st fair. Me, in my vow’d
Picture, the sacred wall declares to have hung
My dank and dropping weeds
To the stern god of sea.

Quis multa gracilis te puer in rosa
perfusus liquidis urget odoribus
grato, Pyrrha, sub antro?
Cui flavam religas comam,

simplex munditiis? Heu quotiens fidem
mutatosque deos flebit et aspera
nigris aequora ventis
emirabitur insolens

qui nunc te fruitur credulus aurea,
qui semper vacuam, semper amabilem
sperat, nescius aurae
fallacis. Miseri, quibus

And Milton's translation is literal, practically in word placement and essentially in word choice. The idea that translations can't match the originals is only true when it's not a genius writing the translation.

How difficult is it for greeks to learn koine or homeric greek?

I took french for 7 years in middle-high school, learned VERY little. I cannot even remember to conjugate basic verbs.
I hate france, I will not learn the language more. Though I may really enjoy to learn Portuguese, I think it is beautiful.
I pirated rosetta stone, also I am enrolled for 4 semesters of Arabic in the upcoming academic year (2 semesters + summer term).

>languages I want to learn, most to least
Arabic / &quranic arabic / &egyptian dialect
Russian
Turkish
Portuguese
(power gap)
Chechen
Spanish

They are mutually unintelligible so probably as difficult for an english speaker to learn french or german at the least but classical languages have tiny vocabulary so maybe only that hard.

I'm not even that good at Japanese and notice mistakes in English translations of Japanese /lit/ from time to time. If anything it forces you to read it more carefully and you gain a better understanding of the book if you're actually willing to put in the time and investigate things.

I've heard it said that it's as difficult as a modern English speaker try to read proper old English. But if you work gradually backwards (ie try to read the Canterbury tales first/koine) then the gap between that and modern English is the same as that between them and old English/the Ancient Greek dialects. So it's a matter of reading progressively older texts that can get you used to understanding it. It's not like picking up a completely unknown language, because it is possible to learn using only the modern form of the language as a starting point.

There are actually some very good greek writers and poets after 18th century, some of which are Solomos, Papadiamantis. For example, Kazantzakis traveled the world in search of God and wrote a book about it, the "The Saviours of God" and also wrote "The last Temptation of Christ" which is basically the New Testament from the POV of Christ, in which Christ is humanized to have doubts about humanity, God and his own self, or to give in to emotions such as anger, depression or lust.

Papadiamantis was pretty good, I agree. From Kazantzakis only read Askitiki and it was meh

Anglos should get a pass for being monolingual since we know the lingua franca. Speaking some insignificant language and learning English as a necessity shouldn't be considered truly bi-lingual either because you only speak one real language.

I've always said this. English is pretty much mandatory now and we're surrounded by it (which makes it easier to learn).
