Conscious what? Conscious choices, decisions, conscious-ness? SAY WHAT! SAY IT!

Also, he's proving the Word correct in that those of the world can't comprehend what is spiritually appraised. There is profound symbolism, revelation, and even prophecy within the Abrahamic incident he referenced. He cannot comprehend it because he already appraised the book before he read it, and, as the Good Book says, "he who judges a matter before hearing it, it is folly and shame to him (paraphrased from Proverbs)."

this
i was reading this article this morning and it actually makes me quite angry
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/06/theres-no-such-thing-as-free-will/480750/

>According to Harris, we should acknowledge that even the worst criminals—murderous psychopaths, for example—are in a sense unlucky. “They didn’t pick their genes. They didn’t pick their parents. They didn’t make their brains, yet their brains are the source of their intentions and actions.” In a deep sense, their crimes are not their fault. Recognizing this, we can dispassionately consider how to manage offenders in order to rehabilitate them, protect society, and reduce future offending. Harris thinks that, in time, “it might be possible to cure something like psychopathy,” but only if we accept that the brain, and not some airy-fairy free will, is the source of the deviancy.

The Last Psychiatrist talked about this. Society is relabeling behavioral issues as medical issues rather than legal ones. This is dangerous for civil liberties—you have the right to a speedy trial if you’re problem is only legal, but you can be put on a psychiatric hold indefinitely if it’s medical. The postmodern zeitgeist is to reject that man can’t be “evil.” He can only be ill.

It's obviously stupid, that's all it is. We know pretty much nothing about the mind, how it works and if (and how) it can be "free".
What you call "obviously true" is just a believe, something completely unproven. We even have proven evidence the mind (whatever it is) can influence materialisitc processes -> see for example the prove of the placebo effect which shouldn't be possible from a strictly materialistic point of view (that means: if the mind didn't have any influence on your acts at all).

Well, if evolution just established a mind to be a passive observer of our robotic acts, we'd spend a lot of engergy for absolutely nothing. Since spending energy for absolutely nothing isn't exactly an evolutionary advantage, why does one of the most succesful organisms out there, obviously have a mind?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we have a free will in the absolute sense of the word, but completely negating a certain freedom of choice of our acts (being a robot) doesn't make sense as well.

wtf? I can't think of a single example of that in the entire thing. There was even that scene where the woman tells off a crowd of men that she has no obligation to reciprocate any man's advances or to love anyone at all, and that they should all basically go fuck themselves. And they respect her wishes. DQ was one of the most fun novels I've ever read so it boggles my mind when people call it boring, too

>are you saying "God is the universe"
No, im saying God represents a set of absolute value(s) which are unchanging. Very similar if not exactly like the "laws" of physics, though the only difference is you don't call them the letters G, O, and D in that sequence. By God of the Abrahamic religions I assumed you mean a creative God who created the universe using his design and rules. If we take the "laws" of the natural world and make the most convenient (and miraculous) assumption that they created themselves (big bang/ basic materialist teleology), then they are functionally the same as even the Abrahamic caricature of God only differing in name. For this reason, believing in "natural law" and turning your nose up to the concept of God is a contridiction.

If we want to overcome this contridiction, we must recognize that, metaphysically, this reality is ever-changing in ways that will and have defied our current "laws" of nature. What is commonly referred to as absolute "laws" and "constants" are simply habits of a reality we experience in tiny fragments of its whole existence. The speed of light is not a constant, along with many other assumed constants, but acknowledging this would turn the scientific orthodoxy on its head, so there are pragmatic reasons we make these (wrong) assumptions, though you still shouldn't ever believe in them as absolute truths defining reality.

>> No.11308943

>>11308896
>just call them what they are
When you say the name of something, you aren't calling them what they are, you just assign them that name, it's irrelivent to what they actually are as experienced by us. This is something basic I know you already know, and it isn't the main point. The point is, these two particular concepts, God and the "laws" of nature are functionally the same thing, a representation of a set of absolute values from which these reality is ordered by. For this reason, believing in the "laws" of nature and denouncing God at the same time is contradictory. I'm not "tacking on God", you (an assumed follower of natural law) are the one who is guilty of that.

The only silver lining I can see between the two is ethics, though many nu-atheists seem to be having a fun time developing many oughts from an is in a sort of counter-ethics argument against those of God-based religions. Basically my gripe is with people especially the scientific orthodoxy worshiping (assumed) absolute truths while taking the high ground above religious persons doing the same thing. I outlined a solution to this in the second half my previous post.

No, that's a strawman. Many feminists (especially in the "second wave") center their research entirely around the womb, and think that oppression is caused by society trying to impose chastity and/or motherhood on women. Others believe that the concept of womanhood doesn't even make sense, and should be done away with. Still more don't think much about the causes of oppression, and just argue that women and men deserve equal treatment (something which research shows they don't get — given two identical resumés, one with a male name and one with a female name, employers are more likely to call in the man for an interview).

The "men and women are the same" meme is tumblrettes misunderstanding feminism and youtube """skeptics""" debunking this garbled misreading of feminist texts.

>For them feminism really is about nothing more than power.
I think this is a mischaracterization. It's true that power dynamics are a part of the tumblr crowd's critique of gender, but I wouldn't say that they're just trying to seize power. To me, it looks more like they're using hyperbole. "Ask for more than what you want" is a pretty common tactic in negotiations, so the discussion they're interested is probably something like:
>Alt-right: Hey, I want a white ethnostate.
>Tumblr: Well, we want a BLACK ethnostate, so there.
>Rational™ YouTube™ Skeptics™: Both of these ideas seem bad, and the common idea is an ethnostate, so ethnostates must be bad.
>The conversation continues and the concept of an ethnostate is abandoned.
This usually isn't how things go — the Rational™ Skeptics™ tend to paint the speakers rather than the ideas than negative, which is a lazy intellectual practice —but I somehow doubt that tens of thousands of kids on the internet are unironically advocating for a witch-led matriarchy with a 10% male population.

Goodreads allows you to write reviews before a book is even released, part of the reason that HRC's book is so highly rated. Well, that and a coordinated deletion of the majority of negative reviews. Goodreads is trash.

Unfortunately my gf started going to college and is now heading down the tumblr sjw drain. We had an argument recently because she said that men and women are physically identical in every way except for the genitals. This was apparently taught to her in a sociology class.
I cry myself to sleep at night knowing that I’ll probably have to cut this formerly wonderful girl loose fairly soon.

That review is bait, right? Right?
It would be like complaning about Milton's or Shakespeare's old english. Sure, when Faulkner lived, people spoke with the same form of language that is used today, but he wanted to portray specific times in which specific form of language was spokeno.
