You don't understand it. It's a great cover, it displays the real existential dread of life, it doesn't doll it up or make it look pretty. I really struggle to understand how they end up looking as terrible as they do. They could use public domain artwork and look miles better (which I think they did for years anyway). How many people at Wordsworth are giving the okay to these covers? And none of them have a problem with the way they look? These are the only answers I can think of.

1)The covers are all personally designed by someone high up in the company, or their wife/ significant other, and everyone is afraid to tell them how terrible they look

2)They deliberately make their covers look as terrible as possible just to fuck with people. I don't understand why they would do this but it's a possibility, I guess.

3)Penguin/Vintage pay them off to make their books look terrible so people are shamed into buying the more expensive editions.

Two possible explanations I just pulled out of my ass:

1) in poorer parts of the world, especially Africa, obesity is often seen as attractive, since you have to be well-off to get fat. In the worse parts of the ghetto I can imagine that still being the case.
2) Similarly, the urban poor are overwhelmingly black, so white women can be seen as a status symbol -- you have to be high enough on the social ladder to date outside the shithole you live in, and with a race seen as highly privileged, which might also explain why Asians are like a secondary black man's kryptonite.
