Why is the tone and delivery ALWAYS the same? Always rushed, always the same false trembling of the voice, the gradual move up to bona-fide shouting, the indignation. It's always delivered with way too much force. They sound exactly alike. Calling slam poetry a democratic artform is an insult to both democracy and art. It labels democracy mob rule (the applause-o-meters, Jesus Christ), it indirectly claims that democracy is leveling and nivellating (the exact same form and content every time) and reduces art to narcissistic masturbation, completely excluding the enriching aspect of art that comes from being confronted with something new.

I still think Bloom was wrong about slam poetry - calling it the death of art is much too hyperbolic. Art isn't going to die, but slam poetry sure is, having no redeeming qualities, it's only popularity stemming from the fact that it is a medium often used by people who profit off of the current political climate. There is absolutely nothing timeless about it, there is no grace or depth. It will be forgotten in half a century.

Slam poetry will die soon - just like Rachel Wiley. I'm not trying to be cruel, but the content of the poem (here, they are again all alike) made me reflect a bit upon why I even care. She is hell-bent on dying young. She is effectively trying to immunize herself from the social control she could be subjected to from doctors and society at large. What do you do in the face of such a determined suicide? She wants to be loved, I can empathize with that, but she fails to realize that the social control is usually coming from a place of love (if it's from people who are close to her) or some more vague care for her well-being (doctors and society at large).

Have any of you ever known a drug addict or an alcoholic? It is the exact same dynamic, and the kind of fat people who'll use the term "fatphobic" unironically RESENT the comparison. That I want a loved one to quit drinking or shooting heroin is not because I cannot accept them for who they are. It's because I love them, and I can see their gluttony is killing them.

I wish. Slam and Spoken word is quite big in the UK at the moment. There's a massive scene in the city I live in. I got roped into out of sheer loneliness at Uni in a bid to get friends and get laid. Got the former, the latter never materialized because I'm an awkward manchild degenerate and all the women are right on man haters with boyfriends.

All being fat does is make you more sensitive to insults and more dependent on the generosity and patience of others. Why the fuck that is called "body positivity" I have no idea.
