>> No.11195644

I'm still reading it, but it's fantastic.
I like how hopeful and optimistic it is and how it blends with the philosophical ideas it narrates through it. I think most of its charm comes from the fact that feels like a sitcom set in old Russia.

In terms of realism, Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina are both better.

In general, I think Moby Dick and Ulysses are the two best novels ever, but they are poetic novels and not trying to do the same thing.

War and Peace is still great though don’t get me wrong.

i look forward to reading it, crime and punishment was a knockout. also all the moby dick fans are a little surprising to me. i really enjoyed it but not as much as a couple other books. i totally understand why its regarded as a classic but it didn't hit me quite as hard as Dostoevsky or Kafka

because it's always edgy early 20s who have just read crime and punishment and think because tolstoy isnt as edgy he is inferior

I don't think I've ever come across a reader of Dostoevsky like that but honestly it's someone's loss if they want to disregard another great Russian writer. I don't quite believe people read Crime & Punishment for the edge factor though. Sure, it's dark, but overall it's about redemption through finding Jesus. Nothing less edgy than that.

Its the current year. You can't say things like "find redemption" anymore.

That's a strange thing to say since Moby Dick is very Kafkaesque
