Most boring book I've read since starting to read for fun. Ok until he starts talking about the organizational structure of the Church for absolutely no reason.

>> No.11150687

>>11150676
agreed. the first two sections are interesting but the second half is beyond dull. his biblical reading i would go further and call uninteresting and simplistic.

I would like to read this but have little education about political philosophy besides what was briefly covered in a few high school law courses. Is there anything I need to know/read before starting it?

This is one of the few philosophy books that can be read almost entirely on its own. Hobbes models it after a geometrical proof — proposition, definition, conclusion, QED — and doesn't refer to many outside thinkers (in the crucial parts). Knowing about his historical moment will help, as will familiarity with the Bible, but other than that you can jump in without knowing much.

The sad thing is that as >>11154521 and >>11153010 pointed out you don't really need that much side knowledge to understand Leviathan because Hobbes makes his points very clear. All you need is a functioning brain.
