I don't really understand why people fret so much about reading specific versions and translations here. Just find a copy and read the damn book, you'll at least get an understanding of what the book is all about.
>tldr: Just read it!

>> No.11138746

why would you ask this after buying it? is this an extension of the moby dick meme? or are you legitimately retarded?

Fagles is a good translation. No translation can be perfect (especially with poetry), so you can always read a different one later if you find it interests you.

Pretty much all the well known translations are serviceable, and which you prefer is ultimately going to come down to taste and personal preference for where on the dynamic-formal equivalence spectrum you want the translation to land.

>> No.11138816

There's a reason he's called FAGles. The translation is shit, read Lattimore.

I'll just ask here, is this worth reading? Should I start with some other more important supplementary lit? I didn't really appreciate the Iliad as much as people seem to do, though there were things I enjoyed.

dark blue "sea" once, in Iliad. "dark blue" is spotted 4 more times in Iliad, but for other things, and only in odyssey. Wine-dark dozens of times between them both.
