The CNT had some 1.5 million members in the 30s, and communist parties somewhat less. So these weren't outside forces, the only outside communist force was Soviet infiltration and corruption.

Actually you can basically walk into any building in China, even those with security guards and no one really cares. Just try it anytime you're there, you can usually get to the roof of any building. Just like you can set off random unregulated fireworks in the middle of any street whenever and wherever you want (as all Chinese do for any event, including funerals if it's rural China lol). It's not binary, China has many freedoms that most of the world doesn't. Officially (as in, in terms of system/governance) it is far more authoritarian than a western country but in practice it's not that much more so than any other country, it just does it differently. There is the potential to be, but China isn't some wholly-docile homogeneous society. You can't step its tails without destabilising it.
