It's short and much less obnoxious than The Fault in Our Stars with the whole "breakfast foods" style humor. I would say Turtles All the Way Down is the book to read if you read John Green at all. If you're the kind of person who doesn't like any kind of genre fiction at all, you probably won't like it.

Some of his stories are cozy. Many end on a bleak note ("Some Much Water So Close to Home","Tell the Women We're Going"). Others end in a very hopeful or ecstatic way ("Viewfinder","Cathedral") . Either way, whether for darker or lighter, Carver manages to achieve some atmosphere you can't deny finding yourself at home in; he's a lot like Delillo in this way (though of course he's nothing at all like Delillo in any other way imaginable.) His stripped style lays bare in a way that you can either find yourself cozy or crying as if by gnosis, or you'll be so polarized by its indifference when alluding to voilence, you'll be more uncomfortable than if you'd seen it happening before you.

Tl;dr, Carver knew what he was doing. Harold Bloom even said the man had (by his standard) talent, but Carver died before he had the chance to be truly great. I think he's great despite Bloom.

Are every greek's works like this? It seems like they're obsessed with lineage.

>> No.11074741

>>11074483
To the Greeks, not much was more important than who your father was, and who his father was, and the great deeds done by those whose line led to you. In the Odyssey, for example, it matters a lot that Telemachus looks like and holds himself like Odysseus does, and this instills in the old reaver's friends the attitude that his son, too, must be taken seriously and received generously.

If you want to read some Greek stuff that isn't focused on this aspect of the culture, read some of the comedies. Aristophaneic old comedy handles matters of politics through metaphor and humor, and new comedy (fourth century BC) almost reads like a modern romance plot. They're quite funny, and won't bog you down with lineages beyond one generation up or down of the protagonists.
