>Non-Russian readers do not realize two things: that not all Russians love Dostoevsky as much as Americans do, and that most of those Russians who do, venerate him as a mystic and not as an artist. He was a prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. I admit that some of his scenes, some of his tremendous, farcical rows are extraordinarily amusing. But his sensitive murderers and soulful prostitutes are not to be endured for one moment—by this reader anyway.

Americans confirmed most pleb readers.

I mean, it was also Americans who fell for the meme that Pasternak AS A PROSAIST had any artistic merit whatsoever.

Presumably. Now if the Russians were a proud people they'd be able to bask in the glory.

nabokov is not careless with words, and he had full command of english. here, he is suggesting that dosto was unintentionally, or 'carelessly', funny.

perhaps 'one' should open his dictionary

A Professional Russian here.
We are a proud people but we choose to be proud of conquering other countries, having a strong leader and "winning WW2". Russia is incredibly patriotic.

In addition, Dosto, Tolstoy and Pushkin are hailed incredibly both in Russia and Abroad so I don't really see how we could be any more proud of them - Russian classics are already celebrated.

Why? I'm suggesting you ought to learn English. Knowing English well is a valuable commodity in the 21st century.

Aristotle believed women were inferior to men because they had underdeveloped decisional abilities and that slavery was justified because some men were born to be slaves, and yet we are not that quick in dismissing his opinions, you absolute pleb

He was just jealous. He is an aristocratic elitist and feels wounded to know that some middle class guy is more renowned than him. Funnily enough, it was an ancestor of Nabokov that organised Dostoevsky mock execution.

Nabokov despite many claims was a fairly petty aristocrat. Nowhere approaching nobility and his father was an ardent bourgeois. Dostoevsky was little more middle class than him
