The masses flock to meaningless drivel. Literature and arts where always mainly for the wealthy elite.
I don't see anything new in this development. And yes I'm aware this post sounds rather fedora-tipping.

But it also doesn’t necessarily make you boring either. Bland platitudes regarding generalized things like popularity and intrinsic worth are never true. It always depends upon the subject matter in questions and the principles defining this subject, not the participle or accidental. Read Metaphysics

Then what’s the point. Of course no one thinks what you say is true here, we read. We don’t hate popular things to appear interesting or trendy, we hate them because we see an interesting trend.

I think your attitude is problematic and pessimistic. You're questioning the waste that is mass media compared to literature. And arguing that people should be doing one instead of the other without consideration for what they want demonstrates not a love of literature but a contempt of humanity. The problem is that literature flourishes when it is surrounded by people that love reading so much that it can flourish. Secondly, if you truly believed that one was better than the other--not out of vanity--but out of a genuine faith in the power of great art and corrosive strength of addictive media--you wouldn't belittle them, you would communicate with them or empathize. Far more corrosive than the hatred of physical financial or physical poverty is the contempt of spiritual poverty. And those who shuns those with contaminated souls are exceptionally more vain than those that shun the individuals with contaminated bodies and lifestyles.
II
And the love of reading is incomparable to the love of writing. The greatest writers loved their work so much that they would even hate themselves to produce that work.
III
While I have read from a single book with others, I have never seen a crowd gathered around one computer for Facebook. A computer is for sharing but not for being shared, it seems.
