In Viennese bookstores, the philosophy section is right next to the mathematics, hard sciences, and other subjects that are conventionally revered by society. In america, philosophy tends to be located next to religion, spirituality, self-help, and god forbid... "metaphysics" and the occult. If the bookstore DOES have anything, it's usally the same old bullshit: a Plato reader, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Heidegger, and those horrible "philosophy for the layperson" books. This is nicely complemented with the rampancy of scientism and the stem-worship, and the celebrity of people like Neil Degrasse Tyson, Dawkins, Krauss, Sam Harris, et al.

When you tell people that you are brave enough to study philosophy at the university, they always give you the same "really?" look, and ask you what youre going to do with that degree.

At first I tried to resist it, but now I realize that it is already too late, and I am a broken man.

In my local B+N, which has a huge philosophy section, is located literally adjacent to the bathrooms on an island of its own. Often when I'm browsing the philosophy shelves, I will be accompanied by that public restroom smell of stale poop and sanitizer.

America is cultural cancer and Europe should seperate itself from the US. The US is the hegemonial power, yet can anyone name some great contemporary novelists from there? All your literature is about racism, sexism and oh-im-such-a-victim. Your superficial culture is all about entertainment and immediate satisfaction of hedonistic needs.

this; at the local bookstore where I live in America, philosophy has its own section next to anthropology, history, and linguistics. It carries everything from the classics to contemporary philosophy. Spirituality and new-age books have a very small shelf that is sequestered off adjacent to Science-fiction and Horror, and Sam Harris and Dawkins are placed among various christian evangelist self help texts.

Why would you not put philosophy next to theology in your book store?
