take it slow and dont aim to understand everything the first time, its a short enough book that rereading it is no issue. If you don't have a good memory write down certain words (eg. proposition, elementary fact, internal property, formal concept, etc.) and what is meant by them. He writes in a very evocative way in that it is complicated, but is understandable if you take the time to form a mental picture of what he is trying to get across. Don't read it all in one session, go for a walk after you read some and think about what he said. Write in a journal your thoughts on the text. This applies to any piece of philosophy you have trouble understanding btw

As for the Poetics, it wouldn't necessarily be useless, but if you want to be a screenwriter you'd probably be better off trying to research more modern aesthetic theory as it pertains to the stage and the screen. Unfortunately I can't be much help there.

Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Kierkegaard/Nietzsche seems to be the standard progression after Descartes. There are plenty of other philosophers, but those are the main thinkers you'd encounter in an anthology going chronologically. You could check with the Stanford Encyclopedia or Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, too, because they're great resources. If you want a familiarity with philosophy you should search some terms like rationalism (Descartes), tabula rasa (Locke), empiricism (Locke/Hume) idealism (Kant for transcendental/Hegel for absolute), historical materialism (Marx), etc. If you've read Descartes then you've encountered one of the most long-standing issues in philosophy: mind-body dualism.

For western political philosophy, from the modern era onward, it generally goes Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Marx, etc.
