I just finished The Name of the Wind and I find Kvothe's fixation on Denna to be pretty masochistic and terrible. Not only does he let her emotionally abuse and neglect him while throwing herself at countless other men, but he's also had plenty of romantic opportunities that would have been much better for him. The first time he missed out, I could accept it as "he was just a kid and didn't get the signals" but by the time the book ends it's pretty obvious that he chooses to ignore the signals of women who are not Denna.

The worst part is how he acts smug about how "I may not have her romantically but she cares more about me as a friend more than the other guys she's with, so I win." That is about as cucky as it gets. It's like a 4chan meme. "Sure, my wife rides the cock carousel and we never fuck, but I'm the only man she agreed to marry so I'm alpha AF."

Fuck that anime art. I guess it still matches the book content in quality. Japan is a mistake. And so is Rotfuss.

Why would a Japanese edition of a book not have anime art?

Kvothe is the American equivalent of Kirito or Harry Potter. The only people who dislike him are unambiguously evil people, the world conspires to give him things he hasn't earned, and the few things he does accomplish are inflated out of proportion just to make him look good in the readers' eyes. When he does make a mistake, either the author rationalizes it so that he doesn't have to come to terms with it or it's merely a stumbling block that he can get over by doing exactly what he's already been doing, but louder and angrier.

Textbook hack writing.
