>read non-fiction book
>find it interesting
>take everything in, follow along effortlessly
>1 month later forget literally everything about it
How the fuck do I get over this /lit/? I've read thousands of pages on topics that I couldn't tell you anything about today. I don't want to be a brainlet.

Read more, different works. Eventually things start clicking. Stop trying to memorize particular data, what you want is to actually build up "your own" thoughts insofar as they are an amalgamation of what you have previously read.

You will not learn anything from individual pieces of information, only by linking many pieces together inside your head. That requires taking in A LOT of it because our average efficiency is actually not that high.

With time and maturity you will start getting better at this, until it finally comes to the point you can read and learn from a single essay or from a single book. Until then you have to take the long road.

Try reading more actively, for example you could try making notes or rereading central passages

This. You should read books that are about similar topics, and eventually you'll start connecting dots.

after reading an interesting book, I usually seek out complementary materials i.e. watch an interview with the author, or a lecture on the same topic. This helps to retain information, but it is also important that you are able to formulate most important take-aways from every book, which you read.
However, most important is to re-read stuff.
