Is Proust overrated?
I was considering learning French mainly to read ISOLT in its original language

If you don't enjoy ISoLT in translation you shouldn't learn French

Same goes if you haven't read the first volume

>> No.10700705

go for it. can't hurt to learn a new language, anon.

No, but if you're compelled to think that because a 4chan post told you so, with no argument other than "he just is okay, trust me I'm smart I read a lot of books" you probably won't get much out of Proust.

>Dante is just another writer of epics

>> No.10700759

>read the entirety of Proust's In search of lost time
>spend years mentally preparing for it
>take hundreds of pages of notes
>try to incorporate it into my life philosophy
>spend 18 months thinking about how Proust impacted my life
>talking to a Proust expert one day
>he tells me that scholarly consensus is that Proust was an atavistic sensationalist whose conception of the human was mechanistic and reflex driven
>the whole book is a kind of degenerate bourgeois milieu theory that was fashionable in france at the time
>it doesn't contain an iota more insight or depth than a huysmans novel
>tfw it's like reading les miserables five times only to find out it was written by the guy who wrote game of thrones
>tfw i wasted years of my fucking life sucking proust's cock and he was just a hack all along

What a fucking retard. You can always spot a pseud when they can't identify any relevance to Joyce past "le steam of conscesness"

The thing about Dante is that in terms of pure, undiluted technique, he's unbeatable by kilometers. No other work actually approaches the sheer density of the Commedia. Fucking Joyce, author of Finnegans Wake, considered it exhausting. Doesn't mean he's the most enjoyable tho.
Proust isn't overrated, but the Montecrieff translation is good enough that learning french for him is stupid. Learn French for Racine or somebody else.
