I'm at 56. Here you go.

Mathematics, Economics, Philosophy, and Theology.

As regards Philosophy, I am primarily concerned with theological works and political science.

My profile is pretty hit or miss, though I did read some popular fiction works, I don't anymore. I read exclusively non-fiction.

It's On Conic Sections by Apollonius.

It's a pretty fun logical exercise I do daily. I'm on book III, there are eight books in general.

I guess I went the ol' route of "Euclid's Elements" and had a blast so I wanted more. So that's where I am.

I still read books with words in it though.

But to answer your question, no I don't think it's online anywhere for free like The Elements are.

Am reading the most recent german trans by Barbara Conrad, it's good has lots of annotations, french is in footnotes, 1-2 times I felt some dialogue was kinda clumsy, but I guess that not avoidable when u translate ~2k pages, haven't read another trans to compare obv, but all in all I'd say it's really really fucking smooth, I can read like 150 pages a day without a problem

Yeah that picture above is my edits of Taliaferro's translation.

Let me tell you what I don't like about T.L. Heath's version: they are all one big list of propositions. Instead of separating everything by book, T.L. Heath has hundreds of propositions and some of them have been altered or changed because he thought it would be easier to explain or something.

Basically it's not the original. I've seen Heath's version. Didn't like.

I changed my profile now. I have Taliaferro's translation for the first three books and Fried's translation for the fourth.

I read Euclid and Archimedes with Heath's translation because there were no real other options.

I find the ones who don't review every single book and who haven't read 500+ books more insightful. Joaco guy would be an example or that.
Bbrown would be an exception.
I have very few people though (like it that way), I'm sure there are others worth adding itt.
Even the ones who have read fewer than 50 can be very insightful. And the ones who don't write reviews can be useful at giving ideas what to read as well.

I'm not sure if it's exactly wise to only add /lit/ people btw

>> No.10506420

>>10506356
I mean zero reviews, absolutely none. The people I've added are the most meaningful when I look up a book and see a bunch of ratings from friends whose taste I know and understand. If someone has rated 30 books and most of them are American Psycho, Harry Potter, 1984, Ray Bradbury, etc. then it'll only serve to pad out my friends list and I don't really care for friend collecting. If on top of that they don't even write about books I'll probably never know they exist. Just venting some honest frustrations here, I understand some people are starting to read and I encourage them to keep it up, but they just don't gel with what I'm on Goodreads for.

>> No.10506459

>>10506420
maybe they fear being mocked on /lit/ if they write something that could be regarded as pretentious by the /lit/ community. you can always comment on their rating to get their opinion.
I have one girl who never writes reviews so i gave her a recommendation last year. She was silent for months, but then one day messaged me out of the blue and now she keeps talking to me about books. People can be weird (not the best word) or they just lack the time to write reviews.

I'm one of those people that never really talks or writes reviews. I have a hard time talking and being sociable on any sort of website where you have to have a name. When you have a history attached to your name people you don't have the freedom to change your opinions on the spot or say what you really think. Everything has to be sugarcoated, just like in real life. It makes everything they say feel fake so I quickly lose interest in interacting them. It's the difference between 4chan and Reddit.

there is hardly anything more that being pseudonymous brings aside from consistent interaction. not to mention you put too much stock into what people think of you. start writing a little bit about what you read and I guarantee your readings of books will improve. in my experience nobody engages a lot on each others reviews but it's at least there as a feedback resource which is more valuable than it is intimidating. the important thing to note is you're adding /lit/ people, we're peers, everyone is more or less on the same page even if individual opinions vary.

I'm not following your talk but I don't post reviews because people who speak my language and frequent goodreads are usually YA / momcore readers and I'm not secure enough in my english to articulate more complex thoughts and impressions about the work. Anytime I try it ends up either too personal or too vague / simplistic, and any attempts to dig further into the analysis end up very weird sounding.

I would be lying if I said I didn't care at all what people thought of me but I don't think that's much of a problem. The issue I have is that there's always a certain amount of dishonesty when you're having a discussion on any forum with a name attached to your identity. A good example of what I mean would be when people talk about abortion. On 4chan when somebody says they're pro-choice they have no problem giving you the real reason they're pro-choice. They might say they support abortion because it kills blacks and I absolutely love the honesty because it gives me an opportunity to try and change their minds by arguing against their real reasons for believing the things they do.

If I were to try to have that same conversation with the same person on a website with a semi-permanent identity they would never reveal their true beliefs since they could be shamed and so I could never have a meaningful conversation where I can attempt to change their mind. It would be a pointless exercise and while this example of a conversation about abortion is a little extreme, I think there's a little bit of this attitude and dishonesty in every non-anonymous conversation.

Even if all the people are from /lit/ there's still an added level of dishonesty because everyone is trying to make friends and they want others to like them so they're going to be overly nice to the point of fakeness. When you're in that frame of mind you're not going to be critical or if you see somebody say something dumb you may let it pass.

I don't know, maybe I'm just autistic.

Write reviews for yourself, so that when you remember a book you can look up what you wrote about it. Too sincere thoughts go in the notes field. Reviews don't have to be a complete analysis, just write what you think of it and what you found interesting and why it's worth reading.
English in both posts seems very decent (not sure if both post belong to the same person), so i don't know why you'd be afraid to make grammatical mistakes or those pertaining to incoherence. Keep in mind that practice makes perfect.

How naive are you? This is just shitposting, people are more dishonest on 4chan than anything. and writing a paragraph on homer is a completely separate thing from a debate on eugenics. And besides I think you're just projecting your own insecurities about your own identity. There is no reason to give a fuck. Even the anons who have their real names and photos attached to their goodreads don't seem to have problems expressing themselves.
