I don't believe literary fiction sales were ever that high but I suspect the UK has an issue making literary fiction appealing to consumers. We have one major bookstore chain (two if you're being generous and counting WHSmith) and thus exposure to new and exciting forms of literary fiction is low. Waterstones just put any old shit on their front desks and act with the equivalence of up-selling popcorn when it comes to promoting books. I've worked there and you're actively told not to recommend titles outside of a select few because they have to hit their targets. It's a crying shame.

Plus, new books are usually overly political. I get why but when people's daily lives are infiltrated by constant forms of political discussion (as is usually promoted through social media) the one thing literature need not do is engage with similar topics. It could be an effective counterpoint to questionable rhetoric but it's not. It's merely an extension of exhaustion. People turn away. If you're going to do it then at least be sneaky about it.
