I share your sentiments, that's why I read Closing Time by Joseph Heller.
Honestly I liked Catch 22 better but Closing Time does explore some interesting bits, like the enlisted men that flew with the characters in Catch 22 but weren't even mentioned. Also it takes place during peacetime and all the characters have aged so that might give you some indication as to the change of pace/excitement.
