>First book was great, now I'm wondering if I should even bother with the third.
Like so many other books this year, it fucking killed itself before the trilogy was done. And Breq never goes back to being a hivemind they get stuck on the scifi equivalent of a fucking asteroid for the rest of book 3 and repeatedly drink tea and it's only really worth reading for the cute sociopathic Presger shenanigans, the translators are pretty hilarious but that's about it.

Authors should really try to stick to putting their all into one book rather than shoving all their ideas into the first book and having no idea how to deal with the fallout. Finished Maze of Death yesterday, another great PKD story and all his books come to about 200 pages with no filler, which is far too short in my opinion but the plot is very concise unlike all the new authors who are eager to fill a trilogy with one book's worth of ideas.

But no one will ever beat Dan Simmons at his game of turning his entire universe into a fanfic of itself, or whatever Endymion was supposed to be.

God writing. Either one works as long as you do it right. Though you probably shouldn't just straight up use a mythological creature, for the simple reason that most of them suck ass and were beaten into the dust a long time ago. You always need SOMETHING to differentiate. Even just changing the name or slightly altering the appearance.
But more importantly, just write well, nothing else matters. You can have a great book with sphinxes and chimeras and selkies and gremlins, or you can wind up with Harry Potter. It's all up to you.

Not sure I'd call the proficiency of the actual writing downright "bad," though the storywriting is definitely pretty bad. The only character to receive more than a glance of development is the MC, the storytelling is "this happened then this happened" with an occasional interspersed scene that expands on something, there's the whole Mary Sue aspect of it, and of course it is pretty blatant wish fulfillment.

I would equate reading the books to watching the Transformers movies. It's possible but you really need to switch your brain off if you're going to bother.

The nubile tanned woman cringed as her owner brought forth an erect penis. "I am a nubile woman!" She cried indignantly. "How dare you sex me before my time! Guards!" She called. "Guards!"

Borin, her owner, placed one hand on his penis, and the other on the table and looked at her. "You will be fucked" he said.

"You do not dare to sex me!" laughed the woman, her oiled tan lines gleaming in the low light.

"You will be fucked," said Borin.

"Do not sex me!" wept the plant.

"You will be fucked," said Borin.

I watched this exchange. Truly, I believed the woman would be fucked. She was a woman, and on Gor she had no rights. Perhaps on Earth, in its permissive society, which distorts the true roles of all beings, which forces both woman and owner to go unhappy and constrained, which forbids the fulfillment of owner and woman, such might not happen. Perhaps there, it would not be fucked. But it was on Gor now, and would undoubtedly feel its true place, that of woman. It was female. It would be fucked at will. Such is the way with women.

Borin guided his penis, and muchly fucked the woman. The woman cried out. "No, Master! Do not fuck me!" The master continued to fuck the woman. "Please, Master," begged the tan nubile, "do not fuck me!" The master continued to fuck the woman. It was female. It could be fucked at will.

The supple female sobbed muchly as Borin extracted his penis. It was not pleased. Too, it was wet and sore. But this did not matter. It was female.

"You have been well fucked," said Borin.

"Yes," said the female, "I have been well fucked." Of course, it could be fucked by its master at will.

"I have fucked you well," said Borin.

"Yes, master," said the female. "You have fucked your woman well. I am female, and as such I should be fucked by my master."

The older woman next to the nubile supple tanned woman shuddered. She attempted to cover her small form with her small frail arms and small hands. "I am female," she said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly womanlike. On Earth, I was able to control my fucking. I often scorned those who would fuck me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small older woman to protect herself. Not one of the weak Earth owners would dare to fuck a female if she did not wish it. But on Gor," she shuddered, "on Gor it is different. Here, those who wish to fuck will fuck their women as they wish. But strangely, I feel myself most womanlike when I am at the mercy of a strong Gorean master, who may fuck me as he pleases."

"I will now fuck you," said Borin, the older woman's Gorean master.

The mature beauty did not resist being fucked. Perhaps she was realizing that such fucking was its master's to control. Too, perhaps she knew that this master was far superior to those of Earth, who would not fuck her if she did not wish to be fucked.

"You will be watered," said Borin.

I watched this exchange. Truly, I believed the plant would be watered. She was a plant, and on Gor she had no rights. Perhaps on Earth, in its permissive society, which distorts the true roles of all beings, which forces both plant and gardener to go unhappy and constrained, which forbids the fulfillment of gardener and plant, such might not happen. Perhaps there, it would not be watered . But it was on Gor now, and would undoubtedly feel its true place, that of vegetation. It was a plant. It would be watered at will. Such is the way with plants.

Borin guided his hose, and muchly watered the woman. The woman cried out. "No, Master! Do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. "Please, Master," begged the tan nubile, "do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. It was a plant. It could be watered at will.

The supple plant sobbed muchly as Borin extracted his garden hose. It was not pleased. Too, it was wet and sore. But this did not matter. It was a plant.

"You have been well watered," said Borin.

"Yes," said the plant, "I have been well watered." Of course, it could be watered by its gardener at will.

"I have watered you well," said Borin.

"Yes, master," said the plant. "You have watered your plant well. I am watered, and as such I should be watered by my gardener."

The older plant next to the nubile supple tanned plant shuddered. She attempted to cover her small form with her small frail arms and small hands. "I am a plant," she said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly plantlike. On Earth, I was able to control my watering. I often scorned those who would water me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small older plant to protect herself. Not one of the weak Earth owners would dare to water a plant if she did not wish it. But on Gor," she shuddered, "on Gor it is different. Here, those who wish to water will water their women as they wish. But strangely, I feel myself most plantlike when I am at the mercy of a strong Gorean gardener, who may water me as he pleases."

"I will now water you," said Borin, the older plant's Gorean gardener.

The mature beauty did not resist being watered. Perhaps she was realizing that such watering was its gardener's to control. Too, perhaps she knew that this gardener was far superior to those of Earth, who would not water her if she did not wish to be watered.

Mary-Sue
A sexist term used to enforce the misogynistic ideals that female characters/authors shouldn't be allowed to fantasize or write anything along the lines of wish fulfillment. Its misogynistic qualities are exemplified in many ways, most notably being the fact that it's not a term dominated by the male counterpart despite existing in a patriarchal society, as well as the fact that the male counterpart is largely undecided upon in name and also undefined (see urban dictionary's Gary Stu entry which has no definition but to say "A Male Mary Sue", and the Marty-Stu entry which involves the "Mary Sue" definition to define it).

It's usually used on the whole to bully new authors out of writing female characters altogether, making the task seem so daunting to some that they now only write slash fictions with two male characters, also exemplifying the misogynistic qualities this term involves.

I'd like to write my own fantasy short stories one day, so I read the likes of Elric, Conan, Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, as well as older stuff like Jirel Of Joiry, looking at the nature of these iconic figures of sword and sorcery; their personality, their strengths and weaknesses.

Conan. A great swordsmen and physical figure. Weaknesses? All I could come up with was a lack of street smarts. He is a fish out of water in a settled society - not a schemer or cunning wit. I've yet to read him using magic either, but perhaps somebody can give an example.

Jirel Of Joiry. CL Moore's woman knight . She relies on mental fortitude and willpower in overcoming difficulties - not Conan-like superhuman martial fears, which she seems to be incapable of. Not a magic user either.

Fafhrd and Gray Mouser. These two combine Conan's martial ability in Fafhrd, with Gray Mouser's street smarts and rat-like cunning. I've yet to encounter them using magic, but they have patron wizards. Weaknesses - diminished when separated.

Moorcock's Elric is very interesting because the elements of his being are much more volatile than the others. A superb swordsman in his own right, but physically deficient without drugs - and his Stormbringer sword. There is also his personality; fatalistic, nihilistic, melancholy, but given to mood swings. In fact I wonder if Moorcock wrote him with bipolar disorder in mind.

The one iconic swordsman I lack knowledge in is Karl Wagner's Kane, so if somebody could give me a basic outline of his character I'd be grateful. Does he have Elric's depth of personality? Is he a Conan-like fighter or a more dogged Jirel, or Mouser-ish street brawler? And have I neglected to mention anybody else?

Why aren't you reding Nnedi's books?

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/06/books/ya-fantasy-diverse-akata-warrior.html

>This week, Viking published “Akata Warrior,” the second book in the Akata series, a dark, sprawling epic that some fans and readers have labeled the “Nigerian Harry Potter.” The story centers on Sunny Nwazue, a Nigerian-American girl who moves to southeastern Nigeria from New York, and learns that she belongs to the secret Leopard Society, a group of people with magical abilities. An albino with pale skin and hair, Sunny is treated as an outcast by superstitious locals who call her a witch. But once she discovers her powers, she becomes friends with three other Leopard children, learning to cast spells, read Nsibidi and move between the physical world and spirit realm.

>Over the last decade or so, Ms. Okorafor has published a dozen science fiction and fantasy novels, and has emerged as one of the genre’s most innovative and visionary writers. Her stories, which are often set in West Africa, use the framework of fantasy to explore weighty social issues: racial and gender inequality, political violence, the destruction of the environment, genocide and corruption. She’s won virtually every major science fiction and fantasy award, including the Hugo, the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award, as well as the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa.

>Now, after developing a cult following, Ms. Okorafor’s gritty, unconventional fantasies are catching on with a much larger, mainstream audience. Her novel, “Who Fears Death,” which is set in a postapocalyptic Africa, has been optioned as a series by HBO, with George R. R. Martin signed on as an executive producer. She’s writing a three-issue arc of Marvel Comics’s Black Panther series, as well as a Marvel comic based on her character Ngozi, a Nigerian teenage girl who is “bonded to the alien symbiotic organism Venom.”

>In a genre that has long been dominated by white men and Western mythological tropes, Ms. Okorafor’s stories, which feature young black girls in starring roles as superheroes and saviors of humanity, have been hailed as groundbreaking. Her fan base includes some of the genre’s biggest names, titans like Rick Riordan, Mr. Martin, Ursula K. Le Guin and Neil Gaiman.

>Professional literary agent Steve Laube has been in the industry for 36 years. While he says the industry has always been geared toward women as readers, since a small percentage of the male population buys and reads books, the industry has also changed in recent years.
>“The general market is aggressively pursuing LGBTQ stories for their YA books,” Laube said. “It feels like a prime importance of their publishing strategy.”

The publishing industry is 85% female. It's got nothing to do with what authors or buyers want and everything to do with what publishers want to push.
Getting anything that doesn't toe the politically correct line published these days is borderline impossible.
This isn't just happening in the publishing industry though, it's a whole lot of other mediums. It's not even being pushed by out of touch content creators, it's universally the in-between businesses that are pushing it.

Basically it's the "We want to Call of Duty audience" of the 2010's.

I don't know about that. Conan becomes a King, and is a superhuman fighter, but does he have the rat-like cunning of Gray Mouser (Conan is a capable thief in the early stories), or the strategy of Odysseus?

I was trying to find a weak link in this Mary Sue character, and his being at odds with settled societies, with their duplicity and court intrigues, was the nearest thing I could come up with, and I haven't seen him use magic either.

Anyone who likes reading sci-fi for adventure and advanced technologies, don't read starmaker.
Starmaker is the scifi equivalent of Buried Giant. It's a book filled with the human condition and the philosophical implications those apply. The prose is great, and it's well constructed, but nothing happens. They just visit other planets and philosophize what it means to be human and how the world wars shook the author so much that he wrote this novel.

If you are a philosophag, then this is for you.
If you like books like roadside picnic, botns, then don't bother reading, this isn't for you.
If you liked Solaris, then this book is for you.

>boy is apprentice
>gets a job to take care of female prisoner
>course he falls for her
>tries to rescue her, fails, gets punished
>punishment is a external mission+ fancy sword

solid but typical start. sure it was an obvious failure from the masters, (keeping an horny teenage boy with a hot girl for ~1 year as her only contact? course he falls in love) but still good and the world is really interesting so far.

>mission starts
>goes to an inn
>dont want to pay for his own room, sleeps next to some giant freak
>friend of giant freak invites him to participate in a freak show!? also persuades random girl in 10 seconds to join him
>he wants to buy mantle first, falls in love with another random girl at shop
>somehow random guard finds him there, gives him ultimatum
>ITS TIME TO DU-DU-DU-DUEL!!!! with some random flower sword from a botanical garden? if he refuses duel, assassins kill him
>but first random girl, who should fear him to death, flirts with him
>random horserace to garden!
>random temple accident with casualties?
>no punishment
>random girl still walks along with hero, because everything went perfectly normal so far and the juicy dick from the outcast torturer who likely dies in a few hours is exactly what she wants
>some random shit happens in botanical garden
>~25% of the book left

should i bother with the rest? i really liked reading about the world and some of the conversations. but everything after the inn is just one random event after another random event. The show is a super dumbed down version of the story. They cut out a lot of characters, combined the roles of the characters they cut out into characters that already existed, and removed most of the subtlety of the story. In some cases they completely reverse the character development of some characters.

Probably one of the worst-handled characters in the show is Littlefinger. They gave him too much screen time and made him far too transparent in his motives. In the books you had no idea what Littlefinger was up to until book 4, you just thought he was some kind of small-time opportunist sucking up to whoever was in power. Because Littlefinger has no scenes devoted to him in the books, you only ever see him when a point of view character interacts with him, which is pretty seldom until Sansa is spirited out of Kings Landing by LF, then you get a lot more LF scenes and it becomes apparent how dangerous he is. But in the show they have him wringing his hands and cackling with Varys in season one, making it super obvious what kind of character he is.

This evening I picked out my volume of C.L. Moore stories from the bookshelf and read another Jirel Of Joiry tale: The Dark Land, originally published in Weird Tales in 1936.

Here, the redhaired warrior-noble lies on her death-bed after a battle, when she is suddenly transported to a magical realm of darkness, whose arrogant ruler demands marriage. The story follows Jirel's rejection of his advances and escape. Although this story follows a by now routine formula for C.L Moore (i.e. Jirel enters a magical dominion and must escape it by force of will) this feels like one of the better Jirel stories, with plenty of imaginative magical spectacles (colossii, teleportation, skeletal witches, magical flames and winds) and gothic flourishes of heightened emotion. The ending feels too abrupt, however. 3/5 dinos.

The second is the Dong Wars, the chronicle of Sextus Bigdickus and his army of oiled slaveboys fighting the Cucklers, an alien warrior race whose religion is assrape, and whose sole purpose in life is to rape asses, where the first and only description of several important characters is their cocks, and I'm pretty sure every member of the cast, and every background character, gets sodomized at least once.

Started reading and thought it was a typical grimdark fantasy with a wish-fulfillment main character. Writing kept me hooked. Things got weird as story progressed. Ending left me gutted. All around surprisingly great read.

I wish Sanderson was witty. He's so fucking bad at coming up with clever dialogue, but he tries so hard. I enjoy his writing otherwise but it makes some chapters so fucking hard to read.

The series has more than 12 books and I also have the page count for some of the books - 900, 620, 500, 130, 512, 800, 600, 608, 700, 700, 700, 900. There are a couple more but didn't get page count for them. The 130 page one is a prequel. Please help, need to win bet with grill.

Thef of swords was enjoyable. Ita modern sword and sorcery book. About a thief and a do gooder swordsman.

Promise of blood was okay? Third book kinda felt rush (or am I mixing up unhewn throne and bloodsong?)

New Spring is about 130-150 pages yeah, but the other books he listed are too short, WoT averaged like 800 pages with the shorter ones being 600ish and the longer closer to 1100.

hmm i only know of some litrpg drivel about a sword that gives its wielder the power to upgrade other people.
its also harem smut devil where the protag is basically a living breeding bull for angels and demons. of whom all are female obviously.
its not very good and i stopped reading like 5 chapters in.

Blood Song, it went from amazing 1st person coming of age to multiple POV with multiple mary sues.

NOTW's sequel wasn't good, but at least it was cozy and more of the same style.

Islam has been about being the Alpha Male from day one. Most Muslims live in societies completely dominated by Islam. Mormons on the other hand have had to coexist peacefully (not necessarily by choice) with other religions for their entire existence. So they're more open minded.

Alternative answer: while both cults are foul heresies, Joseph Smith was only a dupe of the dark powers whereas Mohammed was a knowledgeable and willing consort of Satan. The difference is evident in the doctrine and behaviors of their respective followers.

I must have spent forty dollars in two months buying all the clarkes, Asimovs, etc that I could've bought used or downloaded in ten seconds. I even went out of my way to try to get a new Titus Groan and it wasn't stocked anywhere at all.

The truth is that we don't matter, not one of us does. It's an uphill fight and you might as well buy it used when you can. The tastemakers decide what 90% of the market wants, and a few stodgy hipsters on /lit/ looking for 1950s shit a sri lankan picture plank user recommended to them will change nothing.

Good book. Hadn't heard much about it. Picked it up on a whim. There were a few times, particularly toward the end, when it made me feel uneasy. I can't really describe it. It's not disgusting or scary. Just kind of ... offputting.
