Excerpt from CAS' The Seven Geases, a wry, weird, and very misanthropic subterranean travelogue from Hyperborea. Here, a wealthy magistrate on a game hunting trip has unwittingly interrupted an old sorceror's invocations at his remote mountainside abode.

--

"May the ordure of demons bemire you from heel to crown!" cried the venomous ancient. "O lumbering, bawling idiot! you have ruined a most promising and important evocation. How you came here I cannot imagine. I have surrounded this place with twelve circles of illusion, whose effect is multiplied by their myriad intersections; and the chance that any intruder would ever find his way to my abode was mathematically small and insignificant. Ill was that chance which brought you here: for They that you have frightened away will not return until the high stars repeat a certain rare and quickly passing conjunction; and much wisdom is lost to me in the interim."

"How now, varlet!" said Ralibar Vooz, astonished and angered by this greeting, of which he understood little save that his presence was unwelcome to the old man. "Who are you that speak so churlishly to a magistrate of Commoriom and a cousin to King Homquat? I advise you to curb such insolence: for, if so I wish, it lies in my power to serve you even as I serve the Voormis. Though methinks," he added, "your pelt is far too filthy and verminous to merit room amid my trophies of the chase."

"Know that I am the sorcerer Ezdagor," proclaimed the ancient, his voice echoing among the rocks with dreadful sonority. "By choice I have lived remote from cities and men; nor have the Voormis of the mountain troubled me in my magical seclusion. I care not if you are the magistrate of all swinedom or a cousin to the king of dogs. In retribution for the charm you have shattered, the business you have undone by this oafish trespass, I shall put upon you a most dire and calamitous and bitter geas."

"You speak in terms of outmoded superstition," said Ralibar Vooz, who was impressed against his will by the weighty oratorical style in which Ezdagor had delivered these periods.

The old man seemed not to hear him.

"Harken then to your geas, O Ralibar Vooz," he fulminated. "For this is the geas, that you must cast aside all your weapons and go unarmed into the dens of the Voormis; and fighting bare-handed against the Voormis and against their females and their young, you must win to that secret cave in the bowels of Voormithadreth, beyond the dens, wherein abides from eldermost eons the god Tsathoggua. You shall know Tsathoggua by his great girth and his batlike furriness and the look of a sleepy black toad which he has eternally. He will rise not from his place, even in the ravening of hunger, but will wait in divine slothfulness for the sacrifice. And, going close to Lord Tsathoggua, you must say to him: "I am the blood-offering sent by the sorcerer Ezdagor.' Then, if it be his pleasure, Tsathoggua will avail himself of the offering."

Main character of Prince of Thorns does not appear to have a conscience, he'll do just about anything to achieve his goals. He's also super ambitious,so the shit he pulls off can get really crazy sometimes. The books are also pretty short and are quick to read too. The storytelling is non-linear and can be a little disorienting at times, with trying to figure out when the events taking place occur in relation to one another because it's not always clear what is a memory and what is happening right now. This is a style that Lawrence uses in pretty much all his books, though it's especially pronounced in his first trilogy.

But yeah if you find characters who murder without remorse and who apparently enjoy violence to be unpalatable the you'll probably not enjoy Prince of Thorns.

Try "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K LeGuin. Its not exactly about genuine aliens, its about a human ambassador living among very peculiarly gene modded humans whose planet had been cut off from greater galactic society for thousands of years, but I think you may like it better than most anything else I can think of. Nah, the anthropomorphism is a bit overdone, but I think she does a pretty good job at providing them with their own cultural identity. You can say that she is just basing them of a combination of historic cultural norms from different eras and parts of the world, sure, but then any remotely anthropomorphic society in SF is exactly that.

Horatio Hornblower, where a man is equally forced to endure a number of long and ardious journeys before he can truly come back home. Tho I'm not sure it exactly counts as /sffg/. I guess you can always pick one of the Horatio Hornblower IN SPACE! versions, tho they tend to be inferior or feature annoying Mary Sues with absurd pets.

Game of thrones, where everyone and their mother think that they are the Great Odysseus bound to come back from their long quest to claim their rightful place on %insertthronehere%.

Dark Tower, features similarly long and complicated journey with a happy ending, but like the Odyssey, it ends with a start of yet another journey

ehh, i just found her annoying, which is odd because one of my favorite fantasy vaginas is a loud mouth, street rat, thief, with adhd.
there where times where the adhd was dialed back a bit in edgedancer and you got to see something slightly likable for a few moments, where she sat back and actually thought of what to do next instead of acting on instinct, but they only lasted a few moments. but she's still "young" sorta to speak. she hasn't had as much page time devoted to her as any of the other radiants so she still has a chance to grow.

Is Neil Gaiman actually worth reading? The only novel of his that I read was Stardust and it was very disappointing. Not only the movie is way better, but the novel itself wasn't very good on its own right. He barely talks to his own mercenary troupe, there's no foil to MCs edge, no conflict, no character writing OF ANY FUCKING KIND. He gets slightly less edgy over time because of spoilers I can't be assed to type and that's about it. The plot of the first book was ok, enough to finish the book at least. Second book I gave up half way, it was just too boring and I didn't give a fuck about the mutant kid he spent half the book trying to fix or some shit, I forgot by now. I don't know why you're expecting him to bother fleshing out random background characters. What would that have added? The story is about Jorg, it's told in first person from his perspective and Makin was basically the only person he really gave a shit about in book 1. A large part of the draw was the mysteries to the setting and seeing Jorg's actions play out. Since even though he is a first person narrator a lot of what he does is obscure to the reader. We get a pretty steady feed of his feelings and impressions in the moment, but he only vaguely alludes to his goals and plans until they begin to unfold in real time.

So I can't really understand your beef with the story. To me it seems to have accomplished exactly what it set out to do and it did it very quickly with minimal fluff that is so common in fantasy stories.

Granted I don't remember many first person ones either, but Jorg didn't feel interesting enough to carry them on his own, there's barely anything to him. World is just decent at best, as I said the first book had at least somewhat of a plot, but I don't get what's supposed to drive you on to read the rest of the series. There's the mystery of some box that gets introduced in the 2nd book so it's not even an overarching thing, just wasn't enough to keep me interested.

I think the problem is you want something with deeper characters. Lawrence doesn't really write deep characters, he writes characters that do interesting things. The stories are plot and suspense driven. Perhaps that's why I liked them, because I'm not very interested in characters, especially in shorter books. I can come to really like characters over time, they grow on me just due to exposure, but I care more about plot and setting. Broken Empire delivers on both, and does it quickly, it doens't waste my time, I appreciate that.

I will say that if a story is going to drag on, it better have some likable characters because after the novelty of the plot and world building wears off the only thing that keeps me going is a likable cast of characters. I basically only kept reading WoT for Mat.

>bad prose
Is a meme for the most part. If your prose is readable and easy to follow then you are doing it right. If you crave a benchmark for comparison then look at Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson, both of them have very plain and serviceable prose. Get to that level first, then elaborate if you feel it's necessary.
>certain major characters have unclear motives
It depends on the story. You need to think about things like characterization in terms of serving the story. If a character's motivation is unimportant then why waste pages on it? Sure some people might be curious but maybe you want them to be curious. Take criticism like this with a grain of salt. Be open to ideas and if they can give you a good justification for it you should take it into consideration, but if it's just somebody expressing an opinion (i.e. I feel this character's motivation was lacking) feel free to disregard it if you feel your decision was well founded and they have no arguments to the contrary.

Well, even from the opening sentences you can assume from his tone that he rises far above his initial station as an orphan apprentice in an low trade. The first obvious hint that gets dropped is his comment about how he "now rules" the apelike creatures guarding the Autarch's treasure in the mine.

While he talks in detail about e.g. soldiers, boats, and swords, more subtly he's also rather coy about other things that an Autarch might not want widely known: the nature of the being that scares off the apes in the mine, the layout of the palace, and later on the actual passwords and other security procedures he uses to prove who he is.

Just read the series, pretty okay. No characters at all, but a somewhat unique twist on the whole "first contact war" thing. Not great, but so far the best in class. Hopefully things will get a little more difficult from here on out, I'm not looking forward to another "humans conquer the galaxy in a year", but so far it seems like there are at least two groups of aliens they're not going to fuck in the ass anytime soon.

But seriously, there are no characters in this series. Oh, there are people with names who do things, but I've literally seen cardboard cutouts with more distinct and interesting personalities. Space combat is decently written, I'd love to see that part of the books grafted onto some sort of actual interesting characters and story.

Any recs for a space war drama with some characters that could actually emote their way out of a wet paper bag? And preferably with some aliens that are a little more interesting than the furry-klingons, literally-just-humans, actual factual greys, and generic-bug-men?

Man, I swear this series would be better if we just never saw inside the ships and the whole thing was just battles, everything else is boring as fuck.

It's like you read fantasy to have opposite of reality, because you are retarded. Mercenaries (US navy seals, marines, etc) kill people irl, an assassin who doesn't assassinate isn't an assassin.

One thing, as a woman, that bothers me. Is the lack of disturbance towards the concept of pregnancy in novels. Seriously, it's like nobody considers it. Especially given how little of a choice there was in the far past towards our rights and unwillingness. It's terrible body horror shit. It's demeaning, dehumanizing, it fucks up what you look like forever. It breaks your pelvis in microfractures. It's just, awful through and through with some positive elements.

But I don't like how it isn't explored, demeaning and dehumanizing labor we have no choice but to be put through is a concept I don't that's ever been handeled well or properly. Maybe it's me, it's a deep seated fear of not being understood, that men's desires for heirs in the past, or just their mindless desires in the present, override our own autonomy and emotions towards them, making you feel like you don't see in them what they see in you.

I don't know what I'm saying. I just wish women weren't constantly written as "Men! But different!", and not facing the grimey slimey disturbing bullshit dealt with is. Or how we're forced into believing its acceptable after shock and sobbing of it wear off as a child, for some people, and for many people, it doesn't wear off. This was even more prevalent in the past I'm assuming given the lack of choice involved.

One question: How do you feel about BDSM?

A significant part of the plot involves six foot tall, blonde, blue eyed Aryan Dominatrices in skintight red leather bodysuits whipping and beating the Main character(and his love interest!) with vibrating electroshock dildos until he falls in love with them.
There's also powerful wielders of mind control magic(all of whom are hot women) that makes you fall in love with the user, an order of mages(all female) who train prospective male students by locking them in shock collars and raping them(inbetween their demonic orgies). Keep in mind I'm leaving out a lot of the BDSM, no seriously there's a lot more.

A really petty complaint I have about BotNS is how Severian repeatedly succesfully uses his fuligin cloak as if it made him invisible. If fuligin is supposed to be "darker than black" to the point it's impossible to see the seams and creases of the cloak, that's basically real-life vantablack (which to be fair didn't exist back when the books were written) and that would mean than in anything less than perfect pitch-black conditions or several miles of distance you can clearly see the outline of an unnaturally dark object

Tolkien wrote epic fairytales within established archetypes. You pretty much have to be a landscape painter if you're in that field.
I wouldn't say Vance is really all that descriptive. He paints with enough detail to define the scene but which scenes define his work? It's usually the interplay between characters, not the setting. Tolkien on the other hand is replete with scenery defining the action: Orthanc in Isengard, Helm's Deep, the Downs, etc. The forest of Tantrevalle, Lyonesse Town, the Ulflands are nondescript by comparison.
